What size tubing are my brake lines?

I need to order a roll of metal tubing to fabricate new brake lines for my F350 4x4 dump bed. I measured the OD of the tubing with a caliper and it measures about .21 inches. Is the tubing sold referencing ID or OD? Does any one know a good source that sells it by the roll with the fittings? The Master cylinder has 2 different size fittings, I assume so you hook it up only one way. I'd like to swap out the Mater Cylinder as well, but I read posts here of people having bad luck with Autozone rebuilds. Anyone have a good source for these brake parts?

Thanks fred

I've got a 1992 f150.

Mine are 3/16. I replaced almost all of the metal brake lines not long ago.

.21 inch is a little over a 5th of an inch. So 5/16would be too big. 3/16 would work, I think, because 1/5 of 16 = ~3.2 .

Just a thought.

All the lines on my f 250's are 3/16" but going by your measurement of "about .21" sounds like they used 7/32" lines on the F 350's?

7/23" = .21875

Could not find my flare tool..Now I found it. It does not have the adapters for the double flare. Thanx for all your useful info as well.

Hey Fred chill out.

Brake tubing numbers signify the outside diameter.

You said you measured the brake line OD and it was .21 inches.
A 3/16 brake line would measure .1875.

What you're sayiing doesn't make any sense.

Most common brake tubing size used in older US vehicles is 3/16 or 1/4.

ford: 3/16 front and rear with 2 funky fittings: drivers side of the rear axle jblock and front M/C reservoir fitting.

first fitting - childs play at advance et al.

second fitting: generally unobtanium, cut an end, use the old fitting and reflare.

for the record: since ford loves to rustout the frame lines in a spot dujour, dont use a 1 piece line from the ABS to the hose. use 2-3 lines so repairs can happen.

I've never had any problem getting replacements for the two different fitting sizes on ford lines. Any auto parts should have the little adapters needed, I know Napa and Carquest have em in stock.

Sorry, I do not recall the part number. I can post a picture of one if anyone would like to see what they look like.

Edit; found picture

3/16" line with a adapter for the "big" end.

the one for the rear is a simple 3/16x1/4 - got a dozen of them in stock.

its the one for the front of the master cylinder that is odd, I think its 3/8 - 3/16x3/8 is purty hard.
