the most emabarassing day of my life...

it had a bad pinion seal when i bought it and i did not notice. some time before i got it, he drove through some muddy water. it filled the pumpkin with water and purged most of the gear oil out. this caused the bearings and exposed ring gear to begin rusting. when i needed the 4wd (had not check the diff fluids yet...doh!) it siezed and broke the head of the pinon off. FYI, dana 60's are not that strong...at least not in purely stock form or after years of abuse and fatigued parts. i have broken countless 60 components, but i also run most our rigs on 40+ tires with a healthy V8, and some with reduction boxes. i try to stay away from the balljointed 60's in our trail rigs, i much prefer the king pin 60's, we also typically have 35 spline chromo inner and outers, with a bushing style joint (instead of the standard needle bearings). i could go on but you get the picture. we wont even us a 60 in the rear, minimum is a 70hd or 14 bolt. i like the 80, but you have to shave the **** out of them and run at least a 40" tire to keep from diggin ditches.
of and too all the michigan members...i have family up there...been there in the winter a few times... ya'll are all f'in crazy to damn cold, i will stay right here. it neve gets below about 10 degrees on the worst winter days.

My buddy had a 14 bolt rear, he thought it was a dana 60.
60's are great axles.
I'll take one all day long. They still sell for 1000 dollars.
If they were junk, they would sell for 100-300 like 8.8's doo.
I have no idea why you would want to use king pins. they have almost no movement at all.
I dont think i've ever seen a trail rig with kingpins.

i think you are confused as to what a kingpin is vs. a ball joint talyn...
i can get a dana 60 rear here in texas all day long for $125, fronts can be had for $750. 8.8's can be had for $85-100. 14 bolts typically go for $135-150. the 70 hd i have in my jeep cost me $100, but it needed new races and bearings in the hubs. after i geared, locked, rebuilt, and disk braked it i only had $650 in it(was a night manager for o'riellys, loved my discount).

yea, i like our parts prices. well junkyard prices anyways. the ford house still rapes without lube on new parts for our age trucks...they are proud of their stuff. the boot on my shifter tore when i pulled the column apart to replace a few things. the "old" part number was $24, the "new" part number was $48. hint, its the same damn part...

OH and the other funny thing about this whole ordeal...when we went to go get her the next morning (had to leave her on the side of the road...), someone had left a note on my windshield with an offer to buy...i guess that's a compliment?
