Winter Diesel? how bad is your MPG
Just a question on Winter Diesel and wintertime in general. I just hauled a trailer with 1 atv on it. Total weight of say 2000lbs. I noticed that all the places I filled up had blended "winter" diesel. I got a whopping 11mpg for the trip - 700miles. I was getting maybe 12 the first part and 10.9 coming back. Temps going out to Nebraska for deer hunting were in the 40's and coming home to Iowa were in the 20's. Both ways pretty much sucked. This is all hand calculated milage. I was using Howe's additivie.
Does Winter diesel affect mileage this bad? I usually get 14 to 15 hauling this same load.
thanks,
Tom

No it is not stock. A lot of it has to do with how I drive. I try not to get on it to much and the truck shifts a little earlier that way keeping the RPM's down.
It will shift into overdrive at 40 unless I have my foot in it then it does not shift till 55 or 60. I have a TS chip and run around in 75E most of the time but have found that in 100hp it gets about the same as long as I don't get on it.
My MPG is going to drop some more as I am adding bigger wheels and tires real soon right now it is stock wheels and tires looks funny with the leveling kit on it needs something to take up the space. Oh and miles is hand calculated as my overhead console did not work till today when I fixed it but it is reading 17 as well.

Right now it is tuned by Long Island Diesel which for the most part it TS programs but I am plaining on having it redone by Tony in the near future.
It has 50tow, 75E, 100hp, and 140hp on it right now. I also breath out 5" stacks and have 6637 filter installed and some other small tricks.

Well, I have faithfully run BP diesel from a local truckstop, and it's still NOT labelled as ULSD, even though it probably is. Been running it in nearly ever fillup for almost 18 months now.
Point is, even though its winter and the winter fuel is here, I've just switched over to Shell diesel and have actually seen indications of BETTER mileage in spite of it being winter fuel. It's a little more expensive, for sure. I'm waiting to run a couple more fill-ups through the truck to verify the mileage increase, and then I'll report a full cost comparison.
Not to muddy the water too much or take the discussion off topic... I also have to admit that I just switched out a gray CPS unit (showing no symptoms of failure) with my original black unit (which was also showing no symptoms of failure when i installed the gray unit last summer). There have ben some reports of better m,ileage with a "good" black CPS unit, along with improved rotational velocity spec compliance, which is why I changed it back to the black one.

Shell typcially sells "Premium Diesel" which already has detergents and additives from the refinery. (more than you would find in regular diesel) That's why it's more expensive and you sometimes get better mileage.
