Block date code

I have looked at all the ref. and this date code does not compute. Number on flat boss in front of drivers side cylinder head is 1L6Z. Even used magnifing glass. Any help?

Well the L6 means November 6th, and the 1 indicates that the year ends in 1. I'm guessing that the Z is actually a 2, or is used instead of a 2, to signify the second shift at the factory.

Decade

To clarify, the year could be 1961, 1971, 1981, 1991, or possibly 2001. Small blocks were cast in all those years with the possible exception of 2001. The casting number should help identify the decade.
