Engine Noise at oil change 04 F-150

My 07 does this if I allow the oil to drain for say 30 minutes. Basically, I'm thinking too much time, in my case, allows too much oil to drain back out of the oil passages and causes a dryer start up. Then what you'd get if less oil has the opportunity to drain.
I'm sure someone will jump on the, only use a Motorcraft oil filter with the silicon anti-drain back valve. A lack of drain back control can surely cause noisy start ups.

The timing chain tensioners have leaked down as the truck sits. Thus causing a 1-2 second rattle when you start it up. The rattle is the cam chain slapping the guide. Use the Motorcraft oil filter for sure. I have the same issue in my 04 with 38,000 miles. Cheap part to replace, but a heck of a lot of time to do it. I'm leaving mine alone. I'll hopefully find an oil that reduces its occurance. Currently I use Motorcraft synthetic blend 5W20.

Yep, my 5.4 does that too on startup after an oil change, it's normal. Now, if it did it every morning, thats not normal, or every startup, really not normal. Filling the oil filter as much as you can before startup can reduce the time of the noise, but not eliminate it usually. Ford filter or I think purolator filters have the Nitrile anti-drainback devices on them. others are sillcone, latex, or cardboard!!

What about when this happens in-between oil changes? Meaining, when you have more than 100 miles and less than 3,000 miles on the oil change. I get this every so often when I start the truck up. Majority of the time it happes after driving the truck it is warmed up, shut it down to go into a store for 10 minutes and then it happens. Does not occur every start up or everyother for that matter..... It is pretty infrequent when it does occur..
Still a normal thing?

Normal if you use the wrong filter!
That sound would be more normal in occurance if the ford filter is not used on your truck.
Trust the forum, Use only the Ford oil filter.
If it still happens, then the Hydraulic Chain Tensioner has a major leak (internal to the engine, no exterior leak) and needs replaced.

My 02 did this... it drove me nuts. Not sure that it is even remotely the same since steering systems have changed, but I could get under the truck on a cold morning and easily determine that the sound was coming from the power steering pump. I replaced the power steering fluid with Mobil 1 ATF and the problem completely went away.
Hope this helps.

On the 04+ F150 you can prime the oil system to prevent dry start up after an oil change by holding the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor with the ignition in the OFF position and while still holding the pedal to the floor turn it to the start position and crank the engine for about 6 or 8 seconds. Turn the ignition OFF and release the accelerator. The PCM will not allow the engine to start if the accelerator is in the WOT position when the ignition is turned on. Now you can start the engine normally and check for any leaks.
