Hi. The old headliner in my truck was brittle and completely fell apart. Time to replace it. I see that people use Kilmat under the new headliner for soundproofing. That stuff seems pretty thin compared to the foam that was under mine. Is there some foam or padding or something that should be put under the Kilmat? Or not necessary to do that? Any links to other discussions about replacing headliners also greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Self adhesive "boom mat", Dyna Mat, or other sound deadener is nice to put on the underside of the roof.

Did you have foam or a blended material (Shoddy Pad) like the stuff behind the door panels?

I used the kilmat in my 72 f250 cab. Its not sound proofing but sound deadener. It definitely gets rid of the empty tin can sound. I did floor, ceiling, inside doors, cab corners, and behind the gas tank with one box with 36 square feet.

 

Hey, while I'm thinking on it .... do you ever recall if hearing about that stuff holding condensed moisture near metal, or if it shields against it? I think it would shield from condensation? I haven't any rust, it's all sound ... but it has some surface patina. I usually used windows down even when AC was working.

 

The stuff that was there that we removed under the headliner was way thicker than the Shoddy Pad stuff. I'd say it was a good 2" thick (then compressed when the headliner was on).
So put "boom mat" or Dyna Mat or shoddy pad under the kilmat?

 

When I shut my doors it sounds like a cheap tinny piece of junk.
