Tire questions
Hi Gang,
I have Pirelli Scorpion 265/70/16's on the rig now and I HATE them...lousy off road. I have a chance to get some Chaparral A/P 305/ 70R16 for a steal. My truck is totally stock, no lift, no leveling. Which tire is taller? I know the 305s are wider....are they the same height? I never really understood tire sizes. If I get these are they gonna rub?
Thanks you guys in advance!
Tim

If you dont understand the tire size numbers or even if you do this is a good calculator to see the actual dimensions of the tire and compare it to your current ones also how much your spedo will be off, etc. Tire size calculator

the 305's are taller for sure they won't rub either, i'm running 315's on mine right now they only rub when i turn sharp or hit a hole really hard. i'm putting some swamper ltb's on it in a couple weeks. you should be fine with 305's i had some without a problem. they are how ever the same height as the 285 just a little wider.

Yes the 305s are taller. Here is a site that will tell you everything you could want to know about tires and wheels; Car Bibles : The Wheel and Tyre Bible Page 1 of 2

I iddn't like the "tiny" 265s on my truck so I put 295/75-16 on my stock truck. they rubbed a bit at full turn.
The biggest problem with putting the 305s on your stock wheels will be how the tire wear and the traction you get.
The 305s are meant to be mounted on a wider rim so when you put them on your rims the tread will tend to bow so the center of the tire will wear faster. Most people compensate by lowering the air pressure but then you have to consider load capacities and overheating.
You can do it but you'll have to play with the air pressure to find the right levels. Also, don't be surprised if the tires will wear faster.
Good luck!
