I doubt there is one. It's hard for young folks to grasp but VIN numbers didn't really begin until the '60's and even then were not universally used to ID a vehicle. "Numbers matching" just doesn't apply to '50's cars and many '60's cars. True VIN numbers started in like '75 or so. About all you'll be able to do with a '55 is use casting numbers to bracket an age group. It should be a Bxxxxxxx number. (Number Dummy?)

Well, here is the reason I ask, I took my panel to CHP to find and verify a stamped VIN on frame. I've looked and looked in all the familar places and nothing! The panel had NO paperwork at all. Officer tells me to remove all the paint on top of frame rails in engine compartment and on frame rail under seat area on passenger side to satisfy him nothing is there. I told him I've looked meticulously for even a faint number but he would not go for it. Anyway, he said I also need to see the engine vin# and the trans #. I found the plate on trans but nothing on engine. I hope to find what I can and maybe he will need to give me a new body/frame VIN#.

Only the frames are stamped (top rail, right side). If yours doesn't have one, someone may have ground it off -- not good! Never heard of any under the seat area.

There are no engine or trans VINs, he should know that unless he's a rookie. Does your truck have a glove box plate, or one on the firewall?

Are you going for a "reconstruction" title?
