stock trailer hitch?

I have a 07 250 regular cab with a diesel. My stock trailer hitch says it is rated for 6k weight carrying, with 500 pounds of tounge weight. It also says that it is a class V hitch. I have been looking for a hitch that will be able to handle the loads I am going to put this truck through. All of the other class V hitches that I have found have far exeeded my factory class V hitch. Why does ford put such a weak hitch on, and yet call it a class V? Or is this hitch capable of much more?

Sounds like you might be looking at the bumper itself & not the receiver.

The factory receiver is capable of more, but it has to be weight distributing...

Weight Carrying - 5,000 lbs. (500 lbs. Tongue)
Weight Distributing - 12,500 lbs. (1,250 lbs. Tongue)

Your stock hitch is not class 5. The markings on it show that it is manufactured to V-5 standards, but is really a class 3 or 4 hitch. The factory hitch is well made and is probably under-rated.

There are several aftermarket hitches that are class 5 and will handle larger loads and greater tongue weights. The Reese hitch is a decent one and has the 2 1/4 draw-bar.

I have seen them handle way more than they are rated for and are still fine!

Try and snag a used factory hitch from the late model F-350 DRW at a junk yard or Ebay, etc. It is the "Tow Beast" Class V hitch with a 2.5" receiver. Most likely this factory hitch is made for Ford by Cequent which is the parent company of Reese and Draw-Tite.

This is well stated, look at the owners manual and then get down and look at the hitch under your bumper, should have that sticker right there with this info on it.
I know I pull upwards of 10K with mine on my F250.

Thank you lou braun for your answer. I guess it is manufactured to V-5 standards, but is not a V-5 hitch. On the hitch it clearly says V-5 and has a weight carrying capacity of 5,000 pounds, which seemed like a contradiction to me! I guess I will need to get a real class 5 hitch now. Has anyone heard of putnam hitches? I found one online for only $159 this is the cheapest by far! It is a V-5 and rated for 15K weight carrying, which is higher than most.
