Timing Chain cover off '80 460 casting stamp reads 72 Lincoln??
I posted this full size van forum but was told this my be a better place.
I'm finishing a 460 crate motor for my '80 E-350. I had ordered a new timing chain cover but it has some minor looking but major fitting differences. The bolt holes are larger and the crank access where the seal goes is different as well. When looking up the casting stamp on the original cover (D2VE-5069-AA) I get a a 1972 Lincoln??
The differences have to do with how the counter ballancer fits on after the cover, there is a lip on the old cover that the counter ballancer seems to be machined to fit where on the new one the lip is not there. The old cover fits on the new motor with the ballancer perfectly, on the new one the ballancer pushes on the seal like it wants to go in further.
In order to make the new cover work I will have to machine the end of the ballancer and sleeve the bolt holes. Lots of work for this part so I'm starting to search for the cover indicated by the stamping, 1972 lincoln.
If you look at the photo you will see the diameter of the seal opening is different but that is the front. The back of the old covers diameter is the same as the new cover. You just have that lip for the coutner ballancer to fit in.
Thanks,

What I can tell you is that a different seal for the newer cover is used. . .not the same seal for the old cover. The newer covers seal goes in from the outside. . .did you put the crank spacer/hatchet weight in along with the oil slinger? The balancer bears on that, not the cover. . .
It works, trust me. I used the cover from my 1987 460 on the Lincoln 460 I rebuilt for my 87 F250. External balance cover to internal balance motor. And yes, the bolt holes make for a rather soppy fit
try to center it up on the crank, with the seal installed so it sits evenly around the crank and bolt er down!

I've got 3 of these covers now, one I bought off the guys that sell them on Ebay, one for Kragen and one from napa. They are all different in some way!!??
BIG thanks for your info!

After talking with some mechanic friends and all the info from you guys I'm not feeling good about the condition of my counterbalancer, they are recommending I replace the balance or go with the sleeve option. Since the parts are cheap I'm going to do both. The motor has been balanced so I'll need to drill and weigh the new balancer if needed.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

I'm over the hump with this issue but just realized I gave my water pump cover plate with my core =[ So I'm waiting for a gang of parts including another water pump to get back on track. The water pump is a wash, I decided to upgrade it anyway.<o></o>

Thanks again everyone.

I took the one back I bought locally and ordered a hi-pro one online that included the plate. All good =]
