california ecm

I have a 97 F-250 with california emissions. I am getting a cel that is because the computer if loosing continous power. I guess it has a short inside. Anyway, I recently bought a 1997 exactly like mine that was wercked, only it is not cali. emissions. My question is will the computer from the wrecked truck work in my calif. emmisions truck?

Thanks,
Mike

You could get it reflashed at ford for your truck. The Cali trucks have split shot injectors, the 49 state trucks have single shot injectors.

Not sure if the non-cali PCM will work, might run but really rough.
Are you getting a check engine light? or do you have codes?
Code P0603 is normal and will not cause a "no start"

The PCM may be loosing power from the fuse panel under the hood.
Take a look at #9 & #22 fuses...they both protect the PCM power relay.
Could be loose, corrosion ect ect.

Thanks for the responces. I took it to a little shop in town to check the codes and got two codes. I believe one was the one you mentioned. It had to do whith the computer loosing its constant power source. The other was a burned fuse link coming off the gpr. I will check the fuses tonight and see what I come up with. I hate taking the truck to the shop, but I am terrible with wiring, and this guy has worked on my buddies mercedes with a waste veggie oil kit exactly like mine so I knew he was famaliar with it if the had to get into the fuel system. Most mechanics don't like messign with it.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike, That might be part of your problem.
Take a look at the schematic.
Power to the PCM goes through 5 fusible links that are connected to
the GPR. Two green and 3 blue.
The green fuses are located in under hood fuse box
The blue ones are laying on top the right hand wheel well

Posting the codes will help alot.

The cel came back on yesterday, and I took it back to the shop today. It scanned a P1395. The one for the constant power to the ecm did not come back. So, where do I go from here? I replaced the gpr not long ago. I am going to search this code and see what I come up with. Thanks for the help.

P1395 Glow Plug Monitor Fault, Bank 1

That's strictly a Cali code and may be related to the fusible
links above. The D & E you see in the large black arrows are going
directly to the GPs. D goes to the driver side (Cyl # 2, 4, 6, & 8)
E goes to the passenger side (Cyl#'s 1, 3, 5, 7)---This is bank 1

I will check them right away. I have also noticed that my volt gauge has been dropping and then jumping speratically when I run down the highway at high rpm's. I am thinking the alternator need changed. could this have anything to do whith the code?

all of the fuse links are fine. I was hoping that was the problem, but no such luck.

Check the wires on the alternator. The connectors can get a little loose.

OK... I fixed the wires on the alternator, now back to the p1395 code. I checked the fuse links coming out of the gpr and they are all fine. There seems to be times that the gpr does not go off. that is it does not click the second time to turn off the glow plugs. I changed the gpr recently, so would this most likely be caused by the pcm. I plan to pull off the valve cover this weekend and see if the gp's are actually working and inspect the wiring. How do I check the gp's to see if they are working?

Is easy to check the GP's with the valve covers off.
OHM the top if the GP to a good ground, 3-5 ohms is good,
anything higher than 10 ohms is getting very weak and should be replaced
If it's in your budget I would replace all of them now.

I can get the gp's for about 9 bucks so I will definetly go ahead and replace them. The price of the valve cover gasket is what sucks. It is $55 from one place and $62 from another. Is there a reason that it is so high? Can the old one usually be reused? Also does anyone have a pic with the valve cover removed?

Thanks,
Mike

I just read in another post not to use autolite gp's. What is the reason for this?
