actual gas mileage from Expedition 4.6L

Hi, funny you would ask, this May I traded a 2003 Explorer 4X4 XLT with the 4.0 for a 2001 Expedition 4X4 with a 4.6. I did this as with the newer model Explorer, on a good day I could get 20MPG, often I got 18/19 on the highway with some lights, so I thought who cares about another 1 or 2 MPG. Oh yes, both have the 3.55 gears.
Overall, has worked out OK, but of course the Explorer is easier to park, get in and out of and well, you won't see 20 MPG on a typical Expedition. I got 17.2 on one highway trip and otherwise 15/16 with mostly highway and some lights. Wish it was a little better, but not that far from 18/19 in the Explorer.
The Explorer XLT line both 2nd and 3rd generation do have good cloth XLT seats for longer trips. The Expedition, up through 2002 has farily soft leather seats and they are not as comfortable on long trips.
Both good vehicles and drive easy. I can see why many do say that for the Expedition it's worth it to get the 5.4 given the size of the vehicle.
Thanks and hope this help
