I have a 1996 Eddie Baur extended cab f-150,my son will be getting his operators liscense on Oct 8th and will be starting to drive this vehicle then.I am looking to upgrade the factory sound system, presently has Ford am/fm cassette with speakers in the doors and in the back by the area where the seatbelts pull down(plastic panel).I would like to install speakers only, just for the time being, then at a later date upgrade with a higher quality stereo unit.My question is what size are the speakers in the doors,6x8 possibly? And are the rear speakers the same size I don't want to have to modify anyhing to install the speakers, just a simple installation, hopefully. Also would anybody know what the factory stereo unit puts out (watts),so that I know what speakers to shop for? Thanks very much (and my son thanks you),Jay.

Honestly, you would be better off replacing the head unit before the speakers, unless they are blown. The stock unit is a piece of junk with very little power. A better head unit will sound much better with stock speakers vs. a stock head unit with better speakers simply because of more power.

Really they should both be replaced at the same time, they are both junk. One of the main problems with the stock Ford systems is the head unit and speakers are 32 ohm rated, most aftermarket heads and speakers are 4 ohm rated, mix them together and either one will have reliability issues.

I had a HUGE improvement goin from the stock Deck to an aftermarket, I used the Alpine CDA-9856. I was listening to the radio when i went to best buy and was listening when i left, it was much louder, much clearer, and much more enjoyable... Im still pleased with the way it sounds, but im sure soon i will upgrade the speakers...

Look for a headunit with features that you like...
I personally have used many different brands of headunits, my favorite is by far Alpine.
Once you find one with the features you want and dont want. Then look at what kind of power it puts out... Try to find speakers that are either a perfect match or close to it for the speakers it wont hurt if the power rating is higher than the headunit can put out, just dont want anything with to much more power, unless your going to run an amplifier for them too. Never get speakers with a lower power rating than what the headunit will put out, as you are much more likely to blow the speakers...
