See your other thread for the "Spin-On" oil filter adapter.

Hi, I am experiencing trouble with my adapter kit. I just purchased it from Vintage Ford out of Sacramento, CA. I first installed it without any gasket sealant(just some oil) and it leaked like crazy. I checked the gasket, made sure it was in place, and it still leaked. A couple days ago I put some sealant on and let it cure. Today, I tightened up the plate to the engine block and screwed the new filter on, turned the truck on and it still leaked. Could it be i need more sealant? Need to tighten the bolt even more? Is sealant even right to use on this? any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Mick

Welcome to FTE

When you install the Spin-On filter: HAND TIGHTEN ONLY!

If you use a wrench to tighten it, the filter will soon split open. Not pleasant!

Before you install the filter, put a thin coat of oil on its mounting surface.

Was the following gasket included in the adapter kit? It should have been.

Thanks for the tips! Yes, i was given a rubber gasket with the mounting kit. Should I be using gasket sealant? It says to torque to 25lbs, should I purchase a torque wrench or is it easy to hand tighten to 25lbs?

25 ft/lbs is easy, so easy you can overtighten it if not careful. If you can borrow a torque wrench, that might be the best way.

Hey Bill, did they make these for other engines like the Superduty motors? I remember we had these adapters on the Ford NAA tractor, the '58 F600 292 and even on the 283 in the El Camino. Can't all be the same, but it speaks to the popularity of the spin on vs. the hated cartridge. I ask because perspiring minds want to know, like a guy here:

215/223/262 I-6, 239/272/292/312 Y blocks used the same "Spin-On" oil filter adapter kit: B7A-6882-A

There isn't an adapter kit listed for 401/477/534 engines until 1978. The adapter to block gasket is different with the Spin-On filter.

I do not know if this adapter will work on 1958/77 engines. I'm gonna call that fellow that's looking for one in this linked thread.

He wants either an adapter kit or the original housing for the sock type cartridge filter (B8QH-6737-A). No one has any.

kooper909 - I was curious about your oil filter solution for the 223? I have the exact same issue - can you explain your solution? Did you eliminate the inner tin plate?

Does anyone else have a solution for this? The inner plate seems to break the gasket seal, I have called every expert I can find and nobody knows anything.

Thanks

I Switched back

I had the same problems everyone else was having with the spin-on adapter. The filter just wouldn't seat against the adapter - even when i wrenched it on. Finally I gave up, scrounged the small parts from NOSPARTS and Green Sales and went back to the original cartridge and can. Problem solved.
