Idea: '79 F100 351M -> Lightining 5.4

Has anyone done a swap from a 351M to the 5.4 from a 2nd gen Lightining? I'm considering this, along with a Mustang II IFS and 4-link rear. I'm thinking that the hardest part will be the wiring, since I'd like to keep the OBD II, unless it would be better advised to run a standalone, such as Megasquirt. So it would definatley be best to buy a whole, wrecked L.

Forget the IFS, its way too weak for these trucks. If you want IFS, take the one from an F150.

Basically, there is a ton of room to do whatever you want. There are trucks around with the 8.3 I6 Cummins under the hood, so there is plenty of room.

I too am looking into a 5.4 swap in my 78 f250. I probably wouldnt get it from a lightning but i was thinking out of a normal f150? there isnt a significant difference is there? Im curious to see how easily this can be done.

For what its worth, and considering the original posting date of this thread I have put a 4.6 from a 93 Lincoln Mark 8 in my 79 F100 with a Fatman Fab IFS kit and have 4 linked my rear end, the rear, "8.8" is currently out of the truck being rebuilt with a posi and 3:73 gears. Although it is some work it is one sweet set up and in my opinion well worth the work.
These swaps are more common and I have seen several at the F100 Supernationals.

I have some photos of my build posted in my gallery listed below.

I have not got much done in the past year, divorces tend to slow things down. LOL

good idea but the 5.4 lighting intake with the eaton m112 blower is extremely tall, i dont know if you could fit it under the hood

the 5.4 is appox size of the 460 so width isnt an issue

good luck those engines are beast 390 rated hp , with a tune and pulley you can make some really strong hp

good luck

With the Fatman IFS kit under the front the engine sets low in the engine compartment.
I am not sure with the hood on how much top end room there would be. I am guessing it may all fit well.

My Bullitt has 325 factory HP and is a little powerhouse with the 5-speed tranny; I believe the Lincoln engine I have was rated at 285 hp.
It is capable of MUCH more.

I know I have seen a 5.4 lightning motor under the hood of one of these older trucks in Knoxville last year, all I can say is SWEEEEET!

Before you buy the fatman kit, go to the wrecking yard and check out the '05/'08 crown vic. cop car. Heavy brakes, suspension, etc. Bonus, the motor mounts are dead on. Search around on the 67/72 forum, it's popular there. Rich
