Consumer Reports usually has a decent break-down on vehicles and their longevity vs. common repairs

sorry, no idea about any free sources

Mostly the 04-08's so far have been relatively problem free

brakes are the biggest common maintenance item. the 04/05 years had some rough spots that were ironed out by 06 though.

in terms of major repairs, the 100,000 mark is the biggest 1 I can think of. plug change can be dicey. otherwise it's just oil/filter every 3,000 to 5,000 miles...and every 30k? is axle fluid changeout/fuel filter. the transmission for the 5.4 is sealed and non-serviceable supposedly with lifetime fluid

If you keep the oil and filters changed, they will last a very long time. The first problem my cousin had with his 05 XLT Screw 4X2 with 4.6 was a broken alternator at 208,000 miles. Still doesn't use any oil and the best company vehicle he has ever had.

Rear axle is 105,000 on the 08's, and the front is still getting checked at 105,000...Transfer is 105,000 unless it's off-roaded all the time, and then it's 60,000. Transmission is 105,000 also. Hell, the book goes all the way up to 270,000 miles worth of services. Might be overly optimistic, but I like it.

I had some problems with the fuel injectors and the brakes on my 05 with the 5.4. I wonder if they have these fixed with the 08?
I am considering buying an 08 now instead of waiting on an 09 because it seems all of the bugs they had with the 04 and 05 have been worked out by the time of the 07 and 08. I don't really care about style and all of the bells and whistles like a fuel tank with no cap, etc. I want a dependable truck that rides and handles well and will be problem free for years and years. I don't put but about 5-7K a year in miles.

I'm sure they applied their "lessons learned" on the 05 injectors for the 08. I love my truck, but wish it shifted a little different, so I bought an Edge to tweak it.

Thanks gang for the info ......seems that I found the BEST Ford Truck site here. That said though it does still amaze me that there is not a FREE source out there on the net for major component failures on vehicles.

Major component failure is sporadic. If you don't change your oil, or run it low, then your engine won't last as long as one that gets changed every 5000 miles. If you climb 10% grades every day, towing 8000lbs, then your xmsn won't last as long as mine...Depends on the conditions you drive in. There isn't anything that says at xxx miles get ready to replace the injectors, for example. I'd say your shocks will be ok for 10,000 miles if you're nice to it, and your brakes will last a couple of years if you can put up with the dust.

the only issue that hasn't been resolved is the spark plugs. all of the other problems are gone as far as I've been able to tell.

biggest "issue" that keeps cropping up is gas mileage

Actually the synthetic oil in the rear axle is 'lifetime' unless you tow regularly.

The 08 manual says change it at 105,000 miles...which will be longer than I'll own it....Therefore, it's a lifetime to me.
