HPOP rebuild, and shims?

Well, for what ever reason I havent just stepped up and done this,( no ***** ) but the oil leak that I am seeing in my valley is coming form the HPOP, if you get up on the top of the motor and look in, you will see a 1" disk, with a snap ring holding it in place. I have rebuilt several pumps in this shop, with out knowing what is going on, I have had items fly through the air by removing just this type of set up. Anyone know of an exploded view of this pump, and while in there, where do I place the shim for more oil?

Pat, here is a link to the HPOP service and repair guide: http://www.motorcraftservice.com/vdi...iagnostics.pdf

I don't know of any service part available to fix a leak at that rear plate. Maybe someone else does, but I was under the impression that if it leaks there, you've got major issues with the HPOP. Are you positive the leak isn't on the rear service plug, and that it's just dripping down to the plate? That would be a more common and more likely problem. It would also be much easier to fix.

As for shimming, that won't give you any more pressure on these pumps. The only shim is for a safety blowoff that will release oil when pressure rises above 3500 psi. However, the stock HPOP by itself can't make that kind of pressure, so adding a shim won't give you anything.

Only a handful of folks have changed the swash plate to a 20 degree (upgrading from the 17 degree or even the 15 degree on the OBS trucks). The problem there is that the HPOP is extremely difficult to take apart, and requires custom tools. Everyone that I know that took apart their first one destroyed it. Once they got it apart they figured out what they did wrong and what tools they needed. By the time you get the tools and the parts to do it correctly, you've spent more money than it would have cost to buy a complete high pressure oil system. Sorry, but that's what several other guys have run into. That's why those aftermarket pump setups are so expensive.

The "non-serviceable" plug is the bottom one on the driver's side of the pump.

Has anyone bought the pumps from the link Ron posted? I'm wanting to upgrade to the 17* pump and found one the guy wants $250 for... for not much more it seems like the remans would be a way better value. Do the gaskets that come with the reman pump work on the early 99's? As I understand the later trucks have some kind of a screen in the gasket to filter oil that the early's didn't have.
