Anyone have trouble getting a tire retailer to mount 285s?

I have an '03 with the 16" stock wheels and a couple of retailers (Sams and Sears) have told me that they won't mount any tire size that's not in the fitment guide. The fitment guide apparently shows a 265.

For you cats with monster truck tires, how did you get them mounted? I just want 285s.

Related topic: anyone have a great place to get the Goodyear Silent Armor in far west suburban Chicago (Aurora area)?

Thanks.

Discount tire in Texas wont mount those on stock rims. They say it pinches the tire and it calls for a 7.5" rim, I think stockers are 7".

IVE HAD TWO EXCURSIONS WITH 285 75R 16 tires. my current ex. has goodrich long trails. ive never had aproblem having them mounted. they fit great on stock rims and the ex. looks like they should come with them from the factory that way.

My local tire dealer recommended 285/75/16 for my Ex on the stock rims. Maybe being that Sears and Sams are big chains they are by the book?

I just replaced my 285's on my Ex at Discount Tire here in DFW. No problems in getting them to mount the tires. Sorry to hear that you are dealing with pinheads.
I now have Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor's on my Ex in 285 75R 16. They are great tires. They have great road handling and wet traction. Now I am looking for a place to go off road....

I've got the 16" rims. If they're 7" wide, the 285s technically won't fit. The bold text below is the approved rim width.

Are the 16" stock forged rims on a 2003 (see the photo in my sig) 7" wide? Or wider?

Thanks.

PS. I don't blame tire shops for refusing to mount a tire that technically doesn't fit. I wouldn't want the liability either.

Stock suspension 2000 and 2005 gas V10 4x4 with TJM and Road armor front winch bumpers. Stock bumper restricts tire clearance.

I have run BFG AT 315/75R16s- rub at full lock on leaf springs,
285 BFG AT no rub,
285 Michelin no rub
305/70/r 16 Toyo MT no rub.

I wanted to get the Silent Armor 285s from Sams, but I had the same problem. They would not mount anything on my vehicle other than what it was originally sold with. I got my local mechanic to order them and mount them and they are great.

FYI. The larger chains, Sam's, Sears sometimes even Discount as good as they are at what they do they go by the book 99% of the time. For them being as big as they are one problem any where in the country ruins it for the whole company. If you are trying to do a bigger tire I would go to a smaller chain or an individual store that has been in business or has experience with tires. They will get it done and get it done right. I've dealt with Sammy's Tire in Joliet on a few occasions in selling products to them. They know quite a bit about the industry and usually can get most stuff.
