56 f600 cummins conversion

I started my cummins conversion, pulled the 272 and t98 4sp removed the front clip, had to remove both front and rear engine crossmembers and had to notch the front crossmember , fab. up a front mount for the cummins ( I'm using the factory ford mounts from the f700 ... three point... each side of the flywheel housing and center mount under the front of crank) the engine is now in the truck. Next is install bellhousing and plan how to make the clutch linkage. photos of current progress in gallery

Very cool!

I was going to do the same thing for the most part. I decided against it when I couldn't find a suitable engine and transmission.

What transmission are you going to use and what are you going to do for a parking brake? My plan was to use a 47RE (because of the TALL OD) but I couldn't find anyone that could tell me if I could adapt a parking brake to a 47RE/RH The only other choice I had was possibly a ZF or an E4OD since I could use a parking brake from a Superduty.

What will your final gear ratio be? (Tall, I presume to keep your highway RPMs down)

Are you staying with the original 2 speed axle (5.83/8.11:1)?

Take lots of pictures....I may still do it!!

Cheers,

Rick

Since I had a good (completely rebuilt, balanced and ported 292 I decided (reluctantly) to go with the 292. and I'm still using the E4OD (pics in the gallery)

Looks like you have the good engine too....(inline pump etc)

cummins conversion

I'll be using a fuller 5306 6speed non o/d out of a 95 f750 + 4sp aux trans with 15% overdrive.
the overdive only drops me 500 rpm. I'm looking for an Eaton rear end 15040s with 3.36 ratio and 6lug buds so I can keep my stock wheels. The 3.36 ratio will allow me to drive 60mph in 6th in the main trans and direct in the aux. trans at 1800rpm I know its tall gearing but I have two underdrive gears in the aux. trans if I need them..... on the parking brake the plan is to install a disc brake on the back of the aux. trans between the flange and yoke

That should work good!

My problem was the 5 lug BUDDs that I have on mine. I have FAR fewer choices of axles to use. THe highest ratio EVER available for a 2 speed (5 lug) axle was 5.83 so I am limited.

With my 9.00-20 tires (40" dia), the 5.83 axle and the 0.71 OD in the E4OD I'll get about 2100 RPM at 60 mph.

That would have been a little fast for a 6BT for unloaded "cruising" down the highway.... I think they like to run at 1800 or less for highway cruising... It will however be perfect for my Y-block.

Did you keep the front engine mount cross-member and modify it for your engine or did you remove it and build your own? I am looking for a front engine mount for a V-8 (the cross piece).... My F-600 originally came with a 223 I-6.

I did reuse the stock front engine mount, I took 14in out of the middle and used 1/4 in plate to drop it 9in under the front crossmember .... picture in gallery

I saw that. It looked like you might have just made another one.

I also thought about going to a power Stroke engine too but I just don't have the room on the left side. That steering box would be right in the way of the left exhaust manifold.

Did your 272 have a high mount water pump on it? or did your fan bolt directly to the pump? If yours is not a high mount pump and you have the water pump mounted fan and lower fan shroud, I'd be interested in the shroud if you want to sell it...

That's interesting that the Cummins has bellhousing mounts, that will put the torque into the frame at a strong point. Did F600's have the doubled frame? The torque of the Cummins might have me worried about a stock frame!

The f600 is a single frame but it is 9in wide where the flywheel housing bolts to the frame, same as the f700 that I took the engine out of. I do have some concern because the f600 frame dose taper down going towards the front mount. The cummins has 175hp at 2500rpm and 450ftlbs torque. The picture is the f700 notice the leaf spring wore right through the frame
