Got an F-350-which motor did I get?

Hello all. I just got an 88 f-350 4x4 and I assumed that it would have a 460 in it. I ran the FTE vin decoder twice and guess what. It comes back 351. Is this 351w, 351m(which I have in my 79 f-250), or what? I am surprised that a truck this big would be powered by a 351, but it does seem strong. The vin is: 2FTJW36GXJCB07897. Any history on this would be appreciated.

Look ontop of the intake manifold it will tell you 5.0 or 5.8. If you have a 460 you will have a wierd lookin intake. My F350 has a 351W. Our years came with Windsors vs the M's which were in the older trucks. 79 below I think. The 460 will also have a hubge head and huge exhaust manifolds.
Here is a pic of my 5.8 If it looks like this you got the 5.8L 351W

That's a screwy decoder, then. Position 8 in the VIN is the (original) engine, and yours is 'G', which is NOT the 351W (H). I think the G engine code is a 460.

Well, what you have pictured is a 351W not a 351M. I don't know about the VIN codes though. It was common to see the 351W in F250 trucks. I didn't know they put them in the F350 trucks. Come to think of it though I think Frederics truck is an F350 crew cab with a 351.

The VIN decoder is wrong.

1980/89 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog sez:

G = 1980/85 = 351W 2V

G = 1987/89 = 460 EFI

Engine swapping: What engine izit?

460 = 7 valve cover bolts / 302/351W = 6 valve cover bolts / 351M/400 = 8 valve cover bolts.

btw: No 351M's (or 400's) were factory installed after 1982.

I've had the same issue with that decoder. It also says my 460 is a 351.

If it's an 88 it's EFI 460, that doesn't apply. The 460 has the tall snorkel intake with the horizontal throttle body.

Did ya fig it out? What engine you have. Also if you look at the tags on the rad support/hood it should say engine size. If they are still there. You should be able to tell if its a BB or a SB.

Thank you all for you replys. I've been busy with a death in the family and have not had a chance to reply before today. I used the FTE decoder, by the way, as well as the chiltons manual. I do believe this is a 460. This motor is strong. Thanks again for all the feedback.
