New York F-250 Owners
Anyone able to get passenger plates on their F-250? My 04' F-150 came with commercial plates which I had to deal with our lovely DMV over to get passenger plates. I'm thinking of getting an F-250 but need passenger plates to drive daily ( and legally) on the parkways in southern NY.

I was offered Passenger plates on my F350 in October of last yr... the Title says 5604 lbs. I corrected the lady, but she still said it was an option.
The title on an F250 should be less that the 5500lb limit right? Shouldn't have a problem. I have a 00 7.3L CC LB... so I don't see it being anymore than 5500# on the title for an F250.

I have an 05 F350 KR PSD. Registered since new in NY City with passenger plates. Registration lists the weight as 6968. They never asked if I had a cap (don't need one any more), or bed mounted seats or anything else. The way the law is written it is YOUR responsibility to insure that you have whatever is needed to qualify for passenger plates. In theory, at least, anything with a GVWR over 8800 is supposed to be commercial unless it has a camper shell permanently mounted. But no one at DMV asks what the GVWR is and they don't really care. I've driven all over the country in it and the only place that did anything different was PA. The Turnpike charged me class 2 rather than the passenger car class 1.
They don't ask; I don't tell.

Passenger Plates
I have a 2003 F-250 single cab 5.4L gasser. I bought it used from a now defunct Ford dealer in Rockland county. When I picked it up, they had already put commercial plates on it. They said that there is NO F-250 or F-350 that weighs under the 5501 pound limit for NYS passenger plates on pickup trucks. The truck originally came from Pennsylvania, and was a trade-in at this dealership. Pennsylvania titles have no weight info on them. I called the title division of NYSDMV in Albany a few weeks later to ask them how much longer it would be before I got my title--they told me another week or so. While I had them on the phone, I asked tham about the weight. They said that when a vehicls gets titled in NYS, and there is no weight on the out of state title, they use the NADA book for the info on the weight. Luckily for me, the NADA book lists the weight of a base truck--that is no 4WD, no options, no nothing. My title came through saying that my truck's weight is 5420 pounds. I ran down to DMV in White Plains that day, and swapped the commercial plates for passenger plates--no problem.
As others have said, if you apply for passenger plates, they just ask you if the truck has a cap and seats---They do not ask to look at your truck. The problem arises though, if you are on a parkway, and a cop stops you. He has the power to say that your truck is not properly equipped for travel on the parkway, and can issue you a summons.
A friend of mine who sells auto parts out of his 2500 series Chevy van was on the Cross County Parkway in Yonkers and a County cop pulled him over and told him that the truck was registered wrong. He didn't give him a ticket, but he escorted him off of the parkway and told him that if he ever caught him on the parkway, he would throw the book at him. A few weeks later, he was stopped on Mamaroneck Avenue in White Plains---Now this street is NOT a parkway, but a White Plains cop stopped him and issued him a summons for the van being registered out of class, because he ran his business out of the van. He finally gave in and re-registered it as commercial. So, be aware that if you re-register it as a passenger car, and you do get stopped on a parkway, and the registration says that your weight is over 5500 pounds, without a cap and seats you could be issued a summons.

Thanks to all the replies. Very helpful! I can relate to the above one as an employee of the City of White Plains.
