auxilary power unit

I was looking under my truck that I recently purchased (53 f250) and found an auxilary power unit bolted to the side of the tranny. It has a flathead in it and the heads have 8rt stamped on them. Does anyone know whether or not this is the right setup in this truck or did someone switch it? Also what were the auxilary power units used for besides maybe a dump bed? Any help would be great. Thanks

Andy

I've seen them on tow trucks, it drives a spool of wire that raises the boom.
