Quick question for 1995 302 oil capacity

What is the engine oil capacity with filter for a 1995 302 truck motor? The pickup didn't have an owner's manual in it when I bought it so I can't reference it. I also tried searching but I can't seem to get this new search to work as effectively as the old one. I thought I had previously seen that most other 302's held 6 quarts, but I just finished changing my oil and put in the first 5 qt jug and checked it. It looked to be about a quart over. So I started the motor to fill the filter, then checked again and it is about a 1/16 of an inch under the full mark. So was I wrong in thinking that it held 6 qt or is my dipstick not reading right?. I checked it several times, and once after a drove it a couple miles. Please help I need it to drive to school tomorrow.

It's 6 quarts. My dipstick reads the same way, but I still go with 6. I've only noticed this on 302's and only around '95. The pan is the same as earlier years. I remember reading that some years the dipstick was incorrect, but I'm not sure on the specifics.

So does this mean that the previous owner only ran 5 qts in it for the 84k miles that he owned it? Because when I checked the oil before I changed it, it was just a tiny bit lower that it is now after I changed it.

My '90 302 was 6 qts with filter.

That said, I once went about 10k without changing the oil on my 351. I only got about 2.5 qts out of it. Ran fine the whole time, seems fine now. A quart low on an engine that takes 6 quarts won't hurt anything.

Consider it confirmed. ALL F-Series built from 1987-1996 with gasoline engines (regardless of displacement) call for 6 quarts of motor oil. This means the 300 4.9L I6, 302 5.0L V8, 351 5.8L V8, and the 460 7.5L V8. Add another quart.

Diesels in this year range call for 10 quarts or 14 quarts depending on year model and displacement. All the 6.9L Diesels and 1993 7.3L Diesels call for 10 quarts. Starting in 1994, they increased the oil capacity on some of the 7.3L to 14 quarts, but not all. You have to pull the VIN number and compare. For 1995 and 1996, all 7.3L Diesels called for 14 quarts.

Now you know.

Thanks guys for all the replys. I feel much better now about putting that extra quart in. I was pretty sure that it needed 6 qts but the dipstick read full so I wasn't for sure. I guess I will have to remark the dipstick so I can check it accurately.

Maybe you should reconsider. You can never get all the oil out of an engine when doing an oil change. I don't think I have ever put much more than 5-1/4 quarts in a motor, even after warming it up so the oil flows nicely and letting it drain for 1/2 hour with the plug and filter removed. Unless you suspect you have the wrong dipstick in that motor you have probably over filled it. In any event, there isn't any real danger of engine damage with a 1/2 quart extra, but it may result in excessive foaming of the oil as it gets sloshed around by the crank.

I would think that Ford thought about this when they printed the 6 quart oil change fill capacity in all the owners' manuals. I'm sure there is some variability between every one of our trucks, but 6 quarts at oil change time puts the level right at the full mark in my truck.

That's what I'm saying, I'd trust the dipstick to be accurate unless you have reason to believe it's not the right dipstick for the motor. Who knows, maybe there is some sludge buildup in the motor, it wouldn't take much to displace 1/2-3/4 of a quart.
