rear main seal leaking
Just wondering if anyone else has had their 5.4 rear main seal replaced.
My 2005 F-150 had some oil seeping from above onto the tranny inspection rubber plug. I only had a week left on the 3 year warranty and only 21,000 miles on her. Ford said it was probably the rear main seal but has put some dye in the oil and wanted me to put 100 miles on her. They said when i take it back they will put a black light on it to make sure its the rear main and not the intake gasket or something else. I asked if it is the rear main do they raise the engine to take the pan off, he said no the tranny will have to come out. If it is the rear main i hope i get a good tech to do the job. I obviously dont rack up the miles but shes driven every day somewhere, she hasnt just sat there. I had the cam phasers done at about 7,000 miles, it would be nice if a valve cover gasket is just leaking a bit. At least what ever it is it has happened in the warranty period. I just cant get myself to buy the extended warranty as i dont rack up the miles and figure the years on the warranty will expire way before the miles. I purchased the extended warranty once and never used it because of that. Dont get me wrong, thats a good thing if your truck doesnt need worked on but that money was thrown out the window in that case. Once again, just wondered if anyone has had the rear main seal leak prematurely.

My rear oil seal sprung a leak after 200 miles, right after i bought it brand new! it was seeping right where you are describing the leak on your truck. i had to wait a week while they waited for the seal cause they didn't have one in stock at the dealer. it was fixed under warranty and hasn't leaked since and i got just over 51,000 miles on it.

sucks about the rear seal...hope it's your valve cover. can't you just get your hand in there and do the wipe test?
off topic: I know what you mean about not driving the truck much, but driving it every day.
My 06 has 21,000 miles right now. And that's only because I drove to Texas 2x (~3,000 miles each way). My last truck only got 6,000 miles in 3 yrs...and that was driving it every day when I wasn't deployed. I'm expecting this truck right now to be <30,000 miles in 2010 when she's paid for and I'm shopping for new
