Happy Cinco de Mayo

Happy Cinco de Mayo.

Now go out and have a brew, like Corona, Cucapa. Tecate, Dos Equis, Pacifico,
Negro Modelo, etc. or what ever is your beer of choice.

And don't forget to wash it down with some Don Julio Tequila, or what ever is your pleasure.

Mayonnaise

The 5th of May is a Mexican holiday, but its true origins are not well known.

In the early 1900's, Hellman's Mayonnaise was manufactured in England.

In 1912, the company enlisted the Titanic to deliver 12,000 jars of the
condiment to Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the
great ship after its stop in New York.

This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to
Mexico.

But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. It hit an iceberg
and sank, and the cargo was forever lost.

The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise and were eagerly awaiting
its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss.

Their anguish was so great, they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they
still observe to this day.

The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on the 5th of May and it is known
as Sinko de Mayo.

Sinko de Mayo!

Most people don’t know that back in 1912, Hellmann’s mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York.

This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost.
The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day.
The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo.

Funny....

The Gringos seem to pay more attention to Cinco de Mayo than the Mexicans.

I guess any excuse to consume cervezas is a good one.

You said that right. I never heard of no cinco de Mayo until a few years ago. My parents don't even celebrate it and they were born in Mexico.
Oh well. Another good occasion for having a Margarita.

It celebrates an otherwise unimportant victory over the French who were trying to meddle and get a foothold in Mexico at the expense of the Spanish and the Mexicans. Since we are "friends" with the French again, it's not as special a holiday, but good for the beer distributors nonetheless....

5/5/87, Tustin CA, I5 overpass at Redhill Road. Squeal, crash, horns, crash bang--here comes the railing, followed by an early Bronco. It lands on its nose on the overpass terrace, goes on the roof, and rolls off the terrace, landing on its wheels on fire on both ends.

I got a fire extinguisher from a bewildered to this day gas station cashier, and another fellow did the same. He got there first and put out most of it, while I squirted just enough to cause the fire extinguisher to have to be recharged. Two drunks inside, celebrating "their" holiday, not moved by the events whatever. Uninjured, no other cars involved.

Shoulda let 'em burn. (well, maybe not...every man is my brother--those guys--maybe cousins...)

According to some Mexican History professor, at U.C.L.A., it was first celebrated
in California, in I think, 1863.

It was to celebrate the battle of Puebla, and stop Napoleon's re-institution of slavery in Mexico, or something like that.

Kind of like Paddy's Day isn't really celebrated much in Ireland, here, it's definitely celebrated.

"PARTY MENTALITY"

Let's go find something to throw a party because of......

It has no rhyme and no reason, but the roots are good. Sort of.....

In the seventies a lot of people wanted world peace, which if you think about it is a very good idea. But being stupid isn't. A lot of nations are in full conquest modality to this very day.

The dreams of the peaceniks are the true targets of governments (responsible ones that want continuity for their people and others) to this very day.

We DON'T want wars.

War happens when everything else doesn't work.

I digress.....

Cinco De Mayo is the Mexican Independence day from Spain.

It was when they officially became a nation on their own with all that entailed.

POVERTY

LACK OF A SIGNIFICANT GROSS NATIONAL PRODUCT

GOVERNMENTAL DISORGANISATION.

For many years, the peso held close to the dollar. Some years ago however - the banks of Mexico were ruined.

Cinco De Mayo is celebrated in the Estados Unidos for one simple reason.

It's an excuse to party.

Even ZZ TOP wrote a song about "GOING DOWN TO MEXICO" to party and do things not allowed in the USA.
It was titled "The Mexican Blackbird"

CINCO De Mayo in Mexico is a national holiday.

In the USA it is percieved as a vindication of illegal behaviour.

"Yeah man - there's still some places you can do that..."

I grew up down around there. I know it.

PS: I'm a "WHITE" guy who went there with his Poppa, and saw it. I love the culture, and the people I know from Mexico are wonderful. They have culture that in many ways we don't. Because they care about it....

If they have a school (escuella) they care for their children - they consider it important.

DO WE?

Like THEY DO?

What ARE our schools like? ESCAPE ZONES, where the kids are in DANGER.

It seems to me that people who are trying very hard to make something out of nothing do much better than those who really just don't care anymore because their perception is that they have a cornucopia. Wealth without end...

(He observes)

What use is a life without challenges?

Our schools need to be a matter of national security.

Cinco is NOT independence from Spain. It was a battle & victory over the FRENCH.

Cinco History

In 1976 the peso was 20:1 on the dollar. Something changed that year and it went wild against the dollar, with some adjustments since making it further away.

Not quite sure when it would have been close to the dollar, other than in the 1800s. You can google it....

You also celebrate it by watching the parades, if you want to.

They are colorful.

How this:
1. the mexican kids at school today refused to stand for the flag salute.(78%)
2. about 20% of the mexicans kids were absent today.
3. several teachers allowed the mexican flag to be diplayed in classroom and in one class she allowed it to replace the American flag for the day....

Welcome to Mexifornia.
