My Clearance Lights Are Finally Installed
Hi all,
Well, the day was nice, and I figured it was time to install my clearance lights. My truck is a regular cab. I removed the pillar trim and handles, the sunvisors and the sunvisor inner supports, the 2 push pins, the rear clothes hangers and the dome lamp. I then wiggled out the headliner.
I measured the roof and found the exact center, and then measured out 7 & 7/8" for the next pair of lamps, and then 12 & 7/8" more for the outer lamps. All lamps are 3 & 9/16" back from the windshield rubber--that is 3 & 9/16" from the windshield rubber to the front edge of the lamp. The mounting studs and electrical connector are another 1 & 1/2" back from the front of the lamp, for a total of 5 & 1/16" from the windshield rubber. That is where the holes are drilled.
I own a service station, and have quite a few F-250's with clearance lamps & F-350 dually's come in for diesel, and I have measured many of them, and those were the measurements I came up with.
I drilled the mounting holes to 1/4" and I used a Greenlee 1/2" conduit punch for the hole for the electrical connector. That punch makes a perfect 7/8" hole, and it went through the roof panel like butter. I mounted the lights and then ran the harness down the right side pillar, and plugged it into the connector behind the right side kick panel. I turned the lights on and everything lit up like it should.
I then reversed the dissassembly procedure and everything went back together perfectly. The whole thing took me 4 hours--no real problems at all. Just remember---all 5 lamps must face straight forward, not follow the curvature of the windshield. All 5 lamps sit perfectly flush with the roof using my measurements. Here are a couple of pictures I took.
