My Gas Pump Rant
Many retail gas companies (here in Texas anyway) are capping credit card gas purchases at $ 75.00. What the hell is the deal with that? It doesn't matter if it is an in-house card or a general credit card like MC / Visa. I can go out and buy a new truck with two of my cards, if I was so inclined but, these Bozo's limit me to $ 75.00 for a single gas purchase.

I hit something similar last night with the Power Stroke... the pump shut off at $100.
Actually... there is a reason they do this. They must pre-approve the card before allowing you to pump gas. After you pump, they close the transaction with the final amount. The higher the pre-approval number is the more likely it will be that the card is declined. Because each preapproval attempt costs a "swipe" fee, they'd rather not try $100, and if that fails $75, and if that fails, $50, etc.

I guess the thing about it that really bothers me is the fact that we purchase most of our fuel at a nearby Valero (Diamond Shamrock) and have for many, many, years using their in-house credit card. I pay this card off in full every month and always have. It seems to me that, with today's technology, they could easily mark my account for a higher cap.
For those of us that travel in our work it becomes a real PITA. When on the road I have to either make more gas stops or roll into truck stops which do not always have the best gas prices. EX: $ 92.00 worth of gas at my last Truck Stop fuel up.

They do that because if the card is stolen the card company will reimburse the station the full amount, BUT only if they shut the pumps off when you get to $75. If the station lets it go to $100 and the card is stolen then they are out of luck. At least thats what the guy in town told me.
KW they must just limit all cards to $75 there, my station lets me put in whatever I want on the in house card. I think they would let me empty the tanks if I wanted to.

I think most places must have done away with the $50 cap, or I hope so.
I remember a few years back I was filling my Thunderbird at one station and it shut off at $50, tank wasn't even full. That was back when 93 was $2-something a gallon...
Now it takes $45 just to fill my Tempo with a week's worth of gas. ugh.

IN Vegas back in 2005, The pay at the pump machine wouldn't accept my card because it knew I was from Canada. I had to go in get a certain amount authorized and if the tank filled before that amount of $$... then they would have to use my card again to make a credit.
This really sucks when you're headed directly to the car rental place a few block away ands they DON'T have their own gas pumps.

I hate the 75 dollar cap as well, I cant even fill my own tank...
a year or so ago, I tried to buy 70+ dollars of gas with a hundred.. They told me they couldnt take it, I replied, Well, I already have your gas, and Im attempting to pay for it, Your other option is I can leave without paying for it. They took my hundred

Well at least you guys don't live here in Oregon, where mere citizens are deemed not capable of pumping our own gas. It's actually illegal for anyone put a gas station employee to pump gas.
So it usually goes like this... wait ten minutes for the pump jockey to finish his smoke and wander over to your car. Tell him to fill it up and give him your card. He swipes it and starts the gas pumping and forgets to give you your card back. Wait 5 minutes for the pump to hit the $75 cut off. Wait another 5 minutes for the pump jockey to come back. Tell him to run your card again so you can get a full tank. Argue with him that he still has your card. Wait while he searches and finally finds your card. Wait for the tank to fill up. Wait some more for the pump jockey to come back and turn off the pump so you can leave. Watch as he spills gas all down the side of your car. Listen to him slam the filler door shut, then realize he forgot to put the gas cap back on. Watch to make sure he gets the cap on tight and cringe as he slams the door again. Wait for your receipt to print out. Finally half an hour later leave the gas station.
