2004 F-150 Rear disc brake, passenger side, locking up

My rear passenger disc brake is staying engaged causing the rotor to overheat, hot enough to smell when you are standing back from the truck. To explain more, I can be stationary, on a hill, and the truck will not roll back when you let off the brakes. This seems to be sporadic since when I got out of my truck this morning after a 25 minute drive, the rotor did not seem much hotter than the rest of the rotors. Any thoughts?

i have ran into this a few times.i ended up replacing the caliper and installed a new brake line just for good measures.most of the vehicles had between 70 and 100 k on them.

i agree with l-m. Sure sounds like a stuck caliper.

I know I'm stating the obvious - but make sure your park brake isn't on.

or could be the parking brake hanging up, a known problem with our trucks. The parking brake expanding cam levers tend to seize up over time. Do a search on this forum for parking brake or e-brake and you'll see.

My parking brake was sticking, and had the same symtoms, with one extra. The truck would shake like a stripper trying to get a $50.00 bill.

Jam your e-Brake as tight as you can get it without breaking it, and then pull the release and let it fly back on its own. Mine released and I haven't had a problem since.

Also check your rotor for any wear marks. If it's new, take it back to your dealer and when he plays dumb, mention this forum. It seems to jog memories sometimes.

Thanks again for the help. It was a stuck caliper. The piston had fractured causing the brake to stay engaged.
