Installing Sparkplugs in '97 F150.

I just bought a set of sparkplugs for my '97 F150, small V8, thinking it would be an easy task to change them. I was able to remove and replace only two of the plugs. The plug boots are even harder to get out than the plugs themselves. How do you go about removing and replacing the sparkplugs without removing the intake manifold, etc? Are their special tools?

I notice that you posted again. The questions posed to you on the earlier postings are still relevant and must be answered before anyone could offer you any advice. If yours is the COP (coil over plug) system, then I would advise you to do a search for spark plugs, or simply go back through the postings for a few months. There has been much information posted on this topic. Changing spark plugs on the Triton V-8 with the COP system is not a small matter and the dealership will typically charge around $200 labor. It took me about 3 hours and you do not need to remove the intake manifold. Beside the normal stuff that would come off, I elected to remove the fuel injection rails to facilitate access to the ignition coil packs. Research this carefully before you begin and make sure you have the parts on hand or at least an alternative vehicle to drive in case you have to go out and purchase parts. I changed my plugs at about 65,000 miles and believe they could have gone to 100,000 like Ford reccommends.

My '97 doesn't have just a single coil. There are (4) sparkplugs wires that go in a coil box in at the front of the each side of the block. My local dealer said the labor would cost about $75.00 to change the plugs, if it had been the bigger V8 the labor would be double.

Since you don't have the COP then you already know how to replace the plugs. Sounds like your boots have become very attached to your plugs. When you changed your plugs before, was the engine hot or cold? Try it the opposite of what it was the first time. No tools are required, just be sure to firmly grasp that boot and rotate it to break it loose from the plug.

On my Crown Vic, I have replaced plugs and wires with the engine warm.

Installing Sparkplugs in '97 F150.

I think I made a mistake on my discription of my engine. I'm just an old shade tree mechanic so I unfamilar with some of the new terms.
My F150 has a 4.6 Trition V8. It has the distributorless ignition system. So I guess that means I in for trouble when it comes to changing the plugs.

Thank for your help.
