A-Pillar Spotlight? Factory Option?

Has anybody installed a spotlight in the a-pillar of your Superduty?
I have an 05 XLT and would love one of these!! I was doing some reasearch on the web and up came a requsition form for fleet 2008 f250 XL's :
<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=640 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=top noWrap align=left width=136 bg***************><INPUT onclick=CalculateVehicleQty(Tax.value) type=checkbox value=2318120034 name=Option26> 2318-120-034</TD><TD vAlign=top align=left bg***************>Spotlight, 6 inch Clear Lens, Pillar Mounted Left (DLR)*</TD><TD vAlign=top align=right bg***************>$337.00</TD></TR><TR><TD vAlign=top width=40></TD><TD vAlign=top noWrap align=left width=136 bgColor=#f0f0f0><INPUT onclick=CalculateVehicleQty(Tax.value) type=checkbox value=2318120035 name=Option27> 2318-120-035</TD><TD vAlign=top align=left bgColor=#f0f0f0>Spotlight, 6 Inch Clear Lens, Roof Mounted (DLR)*</TD><TD vAlign=top align=right bgColor=#f0f0f0>$327.00</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
Is there a factory part I could buy??? Has anyone tried this mod and could offer some advice? any info would be great! Thanks

Try this company for a pillar mounted spot-light:
http://www.unityusa.com/

They are the primary maker of all those spotlights you see on police cruisers.
Just go to the application guide to find the right one.

Let me know if you need any more help.

Actually, I should note that these are what Ford uses, just not branded.

Unity is the king of pillar mounted spots, have been for 30 years. Couple things- it's a very dangerous place to mount a rigid object- you fly all over in a crash and that handle aint gonna give. Second- it weakens the A pillar, so the crush opportunity is greater- neither are good things. That said- find a dominant red light/siren shop and have them put it in- it requires a pilot tool (they will already have) that you will use only once and they've likely done dozens and dozens before.

Another route is a roof mounted light that is remote controlled- nothing to hit your head on and it's very bright.

That last post reminds me that they are generally very nerve racking to install, one slip and your truck is messed up.

Being a utility truck mechanic I've installed more than my share of the unity lights and I have yet to mess one up. They come with excellent instructions and paper templates to guide you.

You locate the template, drill the mounting holes and use the light bracket with a bushing for the correct size drill bit. Almost perfect every time!

Check around, I can get them for $150 from my parts source. Napa used to be able to get them too.

Huntsducks, I checked out the Unity spotlight page and all they show for the SD's are a "Door" mounted light. Your's looks like you went through the front post, is that right or is your's also through the door? I'm wondering since if it's mounted through the door then when you open the door the spotlight will move. Just wondering if you used something else? Thanks, Jim.

bigjim,

My lights are mounted through the pillar, not the door. The lights I ordered are the door mount type, the installers were able to install in the pillar though. I did not want them mounted to the door, it doesn't look right and when you open the door it moves (as you stated). Let me know if I could be of further help.

Thanks for the info! So I should order the door mount lights and install them through the A pillar. Did you have to notch out the door at all? Did you use the Unity brand spotlights? Thanks, Jim.

bigjim,

My spotlights are Unity, and yes, the installers did notch the door. One thing though, I did loose the grab handle on the passenger side. I think if installed a little lower, I could have kept it, too late now (for me).

Ok, I'll see about having them installed low enough to keep the handles. Since my truck will be getting taller I better keep them. Sounds like I better have a professional do the job! Thanks! Jim.

I am tickled to see this thread. Have had these on work trucks for years and love them! I am looking at the door mount. Anyone done this? Like to keep the pillar open for gauges. Thanks, Brian
