351M/400 oil pans?

Are the oil pans for the 351M/400 different between the cars and trucks. I bought a 79 F-150 4x4 and it does not have one on it. Thanks for any info.

The 4x4's have a rear sump oil pan, the two wheel drive pickup's of that era, and cars have front sump pans. The vans have rear sump pans also.

Hi,

If you buy a reconditioned pan from a parts store make sure the oil drain is in the right spot! This weekend I bought a pan for my 351M, put it on the engine then discovered that the oil drain is in a different spot! (I think the pan I got was from a Bronco that had a different engine crossmember location)

This means that when I remove the oil drain plug now, the oil will come out of the pan, hit the crossmember, and make a big mess.

I have this problem with my 77 F100...makes me want to take the truck in to get the oil changed instead of making a mess

Isn't there a difference in the capacity of the oil pan between a car and truck? Am I correct in thinking that a truck pan holds 5 quarts(without filter) and a car pan holds 4 quarts(without filter)?

Nope they are both the same. 5 quarts. Some of the 4x4 pans are 7 quarts though I have only seen one though, I doubt it will be the last.

A big problem I've seen is when you don't use a rearsump pan when you need one is the dipstick on the truck goes directly into the pan and on an car pan it goes into the timing cover.

All the 2 wheel drive vehicles I've seen have the front sump oil pan, of course the oil does hit the cross member a little bit.

Junkyards...

The front sump pan on my 78 2WD F250 400 drained oil all over the crossmember. It made a hell of a mess until I made it a front drain pan with a little metalworking skills.

Torque1st, that is probably what I am going to have to do with the pan on my 400 that is in my '53 F100. It's rear sump, but drains on my IFS clip. I'm thinking of making it come straight out the back, instead of off to the side.
