400 lubrication design problems

I need a little confidence in my '79 F-150 Supercab 4x4's engine. Is the lubrication system in this block design a real weak link? What is it that the 385 series guys don't like about it?

It only becomes a problem when you really build these motors up. Once you get to the 525 H.P. or better, You'll want to make sure you keep as much oil on the mains as possible. but with it's design it has to go up top to the lifters first then to the mains. Put in restrictors and add an external line from the front of the motor to the back and your good to go.

Had one for 10 years. High volume oil pump was only thing I did once she had 150k.

The restrictors go in on the block side of where the main bearings are located. I have Moroso's in my cleveland. Those were made to the hole size pretty much. So no drilling is involved. All you have to do is tap the oil hole to the right pitch. I think they go in with a hex wrench and be sure to put some loc-tite on 'em. The oil line from front to back is a good idea and I think I am going to take that one into consideration when I get around to working on my beast again.

What I did was there's a plug in the oil passage just in front of the oil filter I removed it and put a 1/4 pipe nipple in there and came off that with some Hydralic fittings to a peace of hose that reaches to the back of the motor where the oil sending unit goes into the block , take out the sending unit put in a nipple with a tee and connect the oil line and reinstall your sending unit. Now you have the same pressure at the back of the block as you do in the front with more oil getting to where it's needed.
