6.4s and bio useage. WARNING!!!!!!

guys, if you are going to run b5 or higher bio in your trucks beware, espeacially if you dont have great maintainence practices. if you do run bio, change oil at every 100 hours and no more. i have a truck in the shop with 5k miles almost 300 engine hours, that has bio in it higher than b5 and the oil has never been changed. no base oil pressure, base engine damage, powertrain warranty voided. the only reason is due to no oil change since day 1. the ford engineer said it would probably have been fine if SOMEONE would have changed the oil in the truck alot sooner. imagine tapioca pudding concentrated and that is what the oil looks like, pretty much alot of fat from the oil used to make the bio. i actually feel bad for the customer because he bought the truck at a auction and now he is the owner of a brand new truck that needs a 18k engine.

not sure what the deal is, but i ran b100 all last summer in my 7.3 and it ran like a top! i do my oil changes every 5K miles and see no noticalble change in my used engine oil viscosity.

i'm sure there is a reasonable explanation to what's going on, but i doubt that its the biod. (assuming it's near ASTM spec)

i have been using rotella T for the engine oil. what does Ford put in from stock?
maybe it's the type of oil used and not the fuel??

just my .02 worth

5k miles at 300 hours averages 17 mph - must have been doing a lot of idling.

So are you saying that Ford gets the 5.4 gas engines for free then?

No, I read in an article that Ford was paying I think $7200 for the 6.4 from International. I belive that the article was on this site and it was detailing the increase in price that Ford was paying for the motor. Maybe I was mistaking it for the 6.0 but I was not talking about the difference in the window sticker upgrade from the 5.4.

Here is the article, read it for yourself. If they are charging 18K then somebody is making one Hell of a profit!

Unfortunately, not all Bio is created equal. Even if you have a trusted and reputable source, that source's supplier may not be living by any standards. We have a local municipality that runs B15 in all of their garbage trucks. They fuel from their own tanks. One day, everything shut down. Come to find out, their fuel supplier got a load of animal fat based bio instead of plant based. The fat dropped out of the fuel and plugged up everything. Until standards are enforced, I'd be VERY cautious.

Ok, how many miles did the guy go without changing his oil? Lets be a little more specific.

Interesting, I thought it would be more than that.

If you added in the labor for the cab removal, motor extraction, insert new engine, reassemble, and put cab back on, I wonder what that would cost in labor dollars?

The quality of the biodiesel makes a huge difference esp in how it's made.
