flexplate question

im swapping out my 302 for a 5.0 HO. i know that the flexplates on these two engines are different. but is the flexplate that came in the trucks in 74 a 157 tooth or 164? the flexplate that came with my 5.0 has a 11.5" blot circle and the one on my 302 is a 10.5. am i going to need to get a 10.5 157 tooth or 164? also i have a TC from an AOD that came with the 5.0 can i use this in a C4? i wouldnt think i could, but hey if i can it will save me a few bucks.

1969/79 302/C4

C5AZ-6375-T .. Flexplate ~ 164 tooth ring gear.

The above part number was replaced in January 1980 with: E0AZ-6375-A

E0AZ-6375-A was used on 302 and 351W's in trucks thru 1991, and prolly later.

It was also used in cars (Crown Vics/T-Birds/Merc Grand Marquis/Lincoln Town Cars and Mark VI's & Mark VII's, 302/351W's), but I can't recall which ones other than what I listed, or for how many years it was used.

E0AZ-6375-A is still available from Ford. Suggested retail price: $81.34

I can't tell you what the flexplate is for the 5.0 H.O. engine (it might be this one-dunno) - I have no car parts catalogs after 1979.

The engine was pulled from an 85 mustang gt, casting number on the flexplate reads...EOSP-A thats all there is other than an AOD stamp on the other side. So the Flexplate i have in right now is a 164 tooth one? thats a bummer, the only 10.5" bolt circle plate i can find is a 157 tooth one. looks like ill have to buy a new TC then if i cant use the one from the AOD.

this is good info on something I've been wondering about
I have an '86 that was a 302 with AOD converted to a 351W and was wondering if theright flex plate was used
both engine were supose to be '86 model year
so what you are stating if the flex plate off the 302 was installed on the 351 it should be fine

One Exception Here...

When I dropped a 5.0 in my 78, it had a 157 tooth flexplate. You may want to actually count the teeth to be sure. What you have here is a post 82 302 going into a pre 82 vehicle. Your stock flexplate is of the 28oz variety. I would be looking for a 50oz flexplate with the correct number of teeth on it if I were you. Why is my 78 the exception. Why then do I have the small BH? My friend's 79 mustang 302/C4 has the 164t flexplate which makes long tube headers impossible. Why would Ford do this?

I think you are looking for a flexplate from an 85 or newer truck. It shouldn't matter if it had an AOD or a C6.

going off of what nubberdummy posted above, the 69-79 302/c4 combo came with a 164 tooth plate. which would mean that my starter is for a 164 tooth plate. if i used the same torque convertor that i have on my c4 now i would need to get a plate with a 10.5" bolt circle which means that i am only able to get one with 157 teeth. so i would have to get a new starter along with the flex plate. or at least that is the way i am reading it. however if it has 157 teeth then there is no issue and i can simply get a new plate. i have the 50oz plate that goes with the 85 5.0 but it has an 11.5" bolt circle this is where the issue lies. i posted on the tranny forums and was told that i can not use the aod TC with the C4 as the aod has an extra shaft due to it being a lock-up tc. i suppose i could count the teeth on my flewp[late that is on my 302 to verify how many teeth it has, but it is my daily driver and would be a large pain to count 10 teeth or so the turn the crank.
looks like im gonna have to wait till i finish the build and get ready to put it in to find out for sure which one i need.

Not necessarily.

Both the 302/351W used E0AZ-6375-A flexplate, but...

Just like ignition modules it all depends upon the application.

F Series & Bronco (not Econoline)

Some examples, not all applications are listed.

1980 302/C4: E0AZ-6375-A

1980 302/C6: D1ZZ-6375-A

1981 302/AOD: E0SZ-6375-A

1981/82 255/C4: E0SZ-6375-A

1982/91 302 AOD: E2AZ-6375-A < <
----------------------------------
1980 351W C6: D1ZZ-6375-A

1981 351W C6: E0AZ-6375-A

1982/91 351W AOD: D1ZZ-6375-A < <

clgreer: E0SP-6375-A = E0SZ-6375-A

well you just threw a wrench into my short term thoughts of well being
I didn't know they put an AOD behind a 351 all I ever saw was C-6
do you know the difference between the E2AZ-6375-A and D1ZZ-6375-A
reason I'm asking the engine has had a slight viberation since installed
this is on the only vehicle I've ever owned that I didnt do the work on due to not having time so I don't know what is in it
the 351 was rebuilt an installed by a suposedly reputable engine shop and the engine is supose to be an '86 351 HO,but the whole thing has been a nightmare since day one

I have no specs for E2AZ-6375-A. All the parts catalog shows is the part number and application.

The only thing I can find for D1ZZ-6375-A = Marked: D1ZP-6375-AB / 164 Tooth Ring Gear.

DIZZ-A was used on dozens of applications, car & truck beginning in 1971 with Torino/Montego/Mustang/Cougars with C6's & 351C 4V (except CJ's) engines.

thanks for the info,I thought I had found an answer to a 14 year old question in my mind
this engine was installed in march of '94 and has about 6k miles so it's not a daily driver

Something else to consider, the harmonic balancers are also different.

302: E4TZ-6316-A / Marked: E4TE-AA

351W: E4TZ-6316-B / Parts catalog doesn't list the markings.

The mark (Ford ID code) will be stamped on the curved portion of the damper.

My guess is the shop used the 302 flywheel with the 351W engine, prolly because they looked similar.

btw: You can buy the CD version of the 1980/89 Ford LIGHT Truck Parts Catalog from hipoparts.com / Also on ebay. The cost is roughly $25.00.
