If I remember correctly, I beleive there is a recall regarding this problem. Not sure of the details regarding dates and vehicles.

Follow the gearshift shaft under the panel and you will find a union that on mine the bolts got loose. Thighten them and the positions go back to normal.

I have the same problem, the gear shift also feel's a bit looser than usual when shifting in and out of Park position.
I wonder if there really is a recall on this problem? I have actually seen other Expy's and Excursion's have similar issues.

Talking

I just looked at the cable, but mine simply comes in throught the floor in a rubber sleeve, gets held inplace near the brake pedal with a plastic suport, and then straight to a metal braket with a zip tie holding it there (it goes through a small plastic ball wich is held to the metal suport) , and then to the actual shifter behind the dash!

The cable is solid (there are no unions) any place.

Do you mean the part of the shifter wich the cable ataches to?

theres got to be a fix for this, all gears work....it just that damn red arow ....

Have someone move the gear shift while you are under the dash and you will see the play in the shaft, if I remember right there were two bolts that came loose.

I am not sure what year your vehicle is, but usually there is a little string like cable that moves the indicator. The clip may have slipped, or the little cable broke. The ones I am familiar with, you have to pull out the instrument panel to access it. Again, I don't know if yours is set up this way. Cheers..

Yeah, my 99 was like this. It is an adjustment string, and the adjustment screw (if you can call it that) was broke, so we took up the slack, got it in the right spot and zip tied it! Works like a champ.

WhoKnows: I went back and looked at mine. Under the dash just above the steering universal joint there are two bolts at the end of the shift shaft, tighten these and it should solve your problem.

There will be one for the indicator, and one for the actual shift position...if it is going in and out of gears ok, you don't want the latter...but yeah, sounds like you got the right one. My "round ring" was broken and was fixed via zip tie!
