I have a ford 460. The casting number on the head is D3VE-A2A. Does any body know anything about them? Also, if they are not desirable, what are the casting numbers for the decent pre 72 ones?

These heads are from 72-74 429/460.They are large chamber heads(92cc) and have pedestal mount rocker arms.They also have 2.08/1.66 valves.C8SZ-B,C8VE-E,D0VE-C are closed chamber(76cc) have the same size valves and have stud mount rockers.

 

Those heads are the beginning of the large chamber heads. They are ok, but they lack the true power potential of a pre 72' head. I have a set of 71 heads (cast no. DOVE-C) that have large valves and closed chamber. Your heads will be fine, but if you are building the motor to be a runner on the street, track, or just need the motor to be overall very strong, then you'll need the older style of heads.
