Gold prospecting

I was just watching a show on the outdoor chanel called gold fever where they go out and look for gold. Man does it look like fun and I would love to get into it.

Has anyone here ever done this before?
Is it really as fun as it looks?

Im thinking of ordering the kit off of TV that gets you started, just thought I would ask for some input first.

Where are you going to have to go to look for gold? What is the "kit" like, and how much does it cost?

we been thinking of heading over to that diamond park in arkansas in a few weeks and hoping we get lucky.

looking for gold i figure would be like fishing, for me at least. i enjoy it more for being in the outdoors than actually trying to get anything.

Be prepared to get hooked on gold prospecting. I ordered the kit about 5 years ago and after finding my first gold I was hooked. If nothing else its a great was to relaxe and relieve stress. Just you the gold pan and a creek.

yep, prepare to be hooked. I did the same as you about 4 years ago, watched the show, got hooked, ordered the kit. I will say they do make it seem easier to find gold on the show than it actually is... and it's a lot of hard work, but at the same time it's fun and rewarding. My brother and I go on one of their outings each fall, and one of these days we'll make the alaska trip, but it's nice to go on the outings and pick up knowledge from some of the old timers (and not so old timers) on where to prospect and techniques and such. If I were you, I'd see if there's a local chapter or prospecting club near you and see if you can get someone to "show you around" your first time, otherwise you're likely to get skunked your first couple times out.

As far as the kit goes, the three main things of interest to you are the gold pan, which is a fairly standard, run of the mill pan and does a great job of trapping any gold (as long as you have a good technique), the snuffer bottle (for sucking up gold flakes from your pan), and the Claims Club guide that shows you where the claims are at. Other stuff in there, hat, stickers, etc. are basically just fluff.

It's great fun! I've been doing it for several years now, started out with the 'kit', now also have a metal detector and a 5" dredge. Have had the best luck with the dredge. Join the club, go to some of the locations near you and have at it! The magazine you get with membership has a lot of helpful tips in it. Also, if there's ever a gold & treasure show near you I'd reccomend attending. Good luck!

I hear there's gold in dem dar hills, here in California.

But that could be just a rumor.

Wonder why they call it the Mother Lode Country!

Do they allow panning for gold at Fort Knox?

The fact is that there is gold ALL over the place. The problem is how much EARTH do you have to move to get enough gold to make it worth your while.
Trust me.....the guys telling you to buy their equipment to find gold is making money by selling you the equipment.
Don't fall for it.
IF IT SOUNDS TO GOOD TO BE TRUE.....IT IS

Almost everything that's fun initially cost money.

Get a bit of mercury and Okay I'm kidding DON"T do it that way!! A dredge is the
best way to do it, Get a trash pump with a gasoline motor, find a big ledge or rock
put the sluice table down stream a bit with the pump feeding it, stick the suction
side under the rock, ledge, etc. and have someone else with a power washer blast
under the rock, ledge etc. without it falling on top of you, you could just stick the
suction hose under but the heavy nuggets will stay under it, a good 1600psi blast might dislodge The real motherlode is some platinum or any other ium metal but you will have more luck with a sawzall and the parking lot at the mall then trying to pan for
those metals!! JK don't cut off any catalytic convertors!!
