Steering Wheel Adaptor

I need a steering wheel for my truck

I found a nice 1946 Ford car wheel but it has a taper and key fitting on the shaft while my truck has the stock 54 splined shaft

Dose anyone know if a adaptor is available ?

As far as I know no such adapter exists. You would not be the first to try and put a car steering wheel on a truck column. It would be cool if it could be done. The only steering wheel adapters available slide over the splines so you can attach a bolt-on aftermarket steering wheel. Check with Grant for the proper adapter for your particular column and buy an aftermarket wheel of at least 15 inches in diameter. Anything less will make it look like a dune buggy steering wheel. I went with a Grant wheel and I'm happy with it.

Below is a picture of what Speedway Motors calls their "Tapered Balljoint Reamers. I've used something that looks exactly like these for Tie Rod Ends.
These or something from McMaster/Carrs may have the tapere needed for your wheel. Some handy work with a file or hacksaw blade could make some splines.

I would say that a little machine work and a recess for the keyway will do the trick. If you want it bad enough, bring it to a machine shop, and have them take a look.

Thanks for the replys

I am a machinist so I could turn a taper and mill a keyway in the shaft but it would mean disassembling my freshly rebuilt steering box, I could also have splines wire eroded into the steering wheel, Just looking for the easiest route

Looks like this wheel has sold anyway so I shall keep looking
I really like the Grant 40 ford wheel with the chrome horn ring but it is expensive

What other Ford vehicles have the same fixing as our trucks ?

Regards

Steve

How about buying an old 40s box and cutting the shaft and splicing to your shaft. Could hide the splice inside the column. I think they are the same diameter.
