EGR crap
I am wondering if it will hurt anything to put a NON-EGR intake manifold on my 77 460. What does the EGR do anyway? It looks like the one on the manifold has lines comming from it but they just run right back to it like they are blocked off. Thanks.

Well, not entirely sure what youre asking, but and EGR(Exhaust Gas Recirculation) is a smog system, so if you need to pass smog, I wouldnt change it out. The EGR system basically recirculates some of the exhaust gases to get burned again(as the name says) by making use of the EGR valve usually on a spacer underneath the carb. So if thats not there, its not working anyway. Hope that helps.

BigBlock;
I installed my 460 from a 1986 Ford Econoline van. It had all the smog garbage on it. When I had it rebuilt, I took all that stuff off of it. All I have now is a naked 460 sitting under the hood of my F100; and I do mean it looks NICE!!...(Royal Blue and chrome). I live in Georgia, not California though and the 1974 Ford F100 is a Historical Vehicle, so they won't ever check it for smog violations :-)

EGR crap
The EGR function:
The EGR uses the exhaust as inert gas. Although is has a small amount of unburnt gas this part of the emissions system relys on the gas being mostly burnt (inert). It uses the exhaust to absorb heat from the combustion process. The exhaust is relatively 'cool' compared to combustion temps. Limiting the combustion chamber temperature limits the production of oxides of nitrogen. Which helps the auto manufacturer meet emissions requirements.

It also, because of the above reasons, will prevent detonaton(pinging). EGR is not a bad thing, believe it or not.

lvstang:
Are the people disconnecting the EGR and losing performance from EFI cars? The gas is *nearly* inert but does contain some unburnt fuel, so the ECM *leans* the engine more when it opens the EGR. These engines run on the lean side (for emissions) to start, so the further leaning I thiink would hurt performance.
Just my .02

Sounds good!! LOL!! Yes, I've been dealing mostly with EFI stuff for awhile. Have stopped shotgun trouble shooting and will pay a dealer the one hour to diagnose and will repair at home. One fix that was a life saver was a pinging 302 EFI Bronco that a buddy brought to Firestone(don't laugh!!) they replaced EGR, 02 sensors, and a bunch of other stuff to the tune of $600!!! It still pinged!! Took it to Ford, they scoped it and found 3 injectors bad. $99 over the net for 8 NEW take off 19lbs injectors and the $70 dealer scan and we were done. Firestone did refund the money!!!!
The reason I bored you with that story is both firestone and Ford said the pinging could be the EGR. Ford was just able to diagnose better.
At the track the "kids" will disconnect the EGR plug and lose ET. Basically thinking like the start of this thread that all smog stuff is automatically bad.
