67 f100 diesel or 05 crown vic police 4.6 gas

Hello I am wanting to mod my 67 ford F100 I currently have the 300/4spd manual 2wd. I have been wanting to swap a 4cyl cummins 4bt engine into it with a 5spd auto but cant get over the $5,000 price tag just for the basic motor and tranny, and that is wih no accessories or mounts or anything else needed. I just found a complete 05 crown vic police interceptor this morning with 39,000 miles that was crushed in the rearend. The car is complete, starts up and runs perfectly it is just hard to drive due to the crumpled rearend. I can get the complete car for $1800 maybe less if I haggle that was just his first price.

I am wondering what you guys think would be the best choice. I am a huge fan of diesels and would love to use one and could probably find one on the internet for a much better price. I also have no experience with the 4.6L engine or 4spd auto in the crown vic police car. The best thing about this find is that I will get the newer crown vic aluminum crossmemberwith 12"disc brakes and rack and pinion steering plus lighter weight, I would get a modern engine and tranny practically brand new with only 39,000 miles and I could probably use the rearend for the disc brakes.

How hard do you guys think it is to wire the engine and tranny even with eveything needed?

Sorry for the long post I just wanted to be thorough and get your informed opinions.

Randy

the 4.6 would be a huge amount harder then the diesel because there are almost no wires. and the 4.6 might not have enough umph for a F100???? i dont know LBs of a F100 and a crown vic, but i would guess that a f100 is a bit more. good luck.

I know the crown vic weighs a little over 4,000 pounds and I have heard the f100 short bed goes at around 4,100 pounds with a 390 and full tank of gas.

I could go for a 4.6 out of a Mustang or one of the hot 5.4 out of a Lighting or Harley.
Stay away from the little 4cly Diesels You won't be happy with the power. Hey a Power Stroke's not much heaver then a 460.

So what do you think about the crown vic police interceptor motor? I really like my diesels but the more I think about it I dont think I will like the 4 cylinder I would be happy with the 6 cylinder cummins. I can get a complete setup with everything I need to swap into my truck for $2,000 but I want to use the aluminum crossmember out of the 05 crown vic but I dont think it will support the weight of the cummins for long. What do you all think? I can get the 05 aluminum crossmember with rack and pinion complete brakes and suspension for $300, if anything I was thinking about buying it and trying it if it fails then oh well replace it with something beefier. what do you guys think?

Hey guys,

I have installed a 93 Lincoln Mark 8 4.6 32v DOHC in my 79 F100.
You can look at my gallery photos of the build, I am currently working on running the wiring harness from the Lincoln.
I will be modifying the harness to work with my existing headlights and tail lights.

So have you had it running in the truck? if so was it hard to do the wiring? I am tempted to try the 4.6 and if I dont like it then I can sell it and recoupe most of my money. Then on the other hand I may just install the crown vic crossmember and a 6bt cummins and see if it will handle it. Who knows. either way I ordered a complete ford factory wiring book that should cover every wire and electronic device on the 05 crown vic so I will have a better understanding of the wiring soon. I will let you guys know what I come up with.

I wouldn't think you'd be very happy with a lightweight front suspension under a 6BT. I'm putting one in my '68 F250 and I've already upgraded to F350 front suspension in anticipation of the extra load. It wouldn't be too cool if you install the CV crossmember to "see if it will handle it" and find out it won't...when you're on the freeway at speed!

my only other option if i use the 6bt would be the front suspension from a mid chevy 3/4 ton.

carcrafter22,

I have not had the engine running since it has been installed. The last time it ran was April last year before I dropped it out of the Lincoln. As for the wiring everything will plug right back in to its original place except for the lights which will have to be spliced into the Lincoln harness.

For now I have removed the various flexible and moulded coverings from the harness and will be recovering with new split loom tubing and making it follow the contours of the truck to appear more stock.

I have a complete wiring diagram in pdf format I could have emailed you from the Lincoln Mark 8. I also have a 95 Cougar and 97 Dodge 1500 diagrams available if anyone needs them emailed. Most all consist of approx 50 or so pages in color in great detail.

If anybody would want a "FREE" copy of the 3 diagrams I have just send me an e-mail or private message with your email address listed

I have used the following web site for the diagrams: www.ahdol.com they have diagrams for many vehicles and charge 11.99 each.

Thanks for the offer but I already ordered a complete factory wiring diagram manual that has the info for every electrical part on the car and it is specific to the 05 crown vic only I think its like 200 pages or so. Has anyone driven in a classic ford with one of the modular motors in it? What did you think of the power / fuel economy?

I too am completing the 4.6L swap but mine is going into a 65 F-100. I am currently waiting for good warm weather to move in with the swap but I am very excited to continue work on it. I have a donor truck I am going to do all the setup work in and then once it is up and running I will swap it into my 65, and like the previous poster said if it doesn’t work I will sell it and get a good chunk of my money back.

I would have loved to install a diesel, but I am not crazy about Ford diesels and did not want to go through the extra work of beefing up my front suspension to handle the extra weight. Plus I got my 4.6L complete with automatic over drive transmission and the entire wiring harness for only $150.00 so IMHO I could not go wrong. Plus I can keep a Ford in my Ford but still have something more modern and fun to drive.

Jeff
