4x4 Wheel hop
We all know about wheel hop with our old muscle cars [I wont mention mine since its of another company ] But what is your experiences with 4x4 wheel hop? I have only owned one 4x4 before the one I have now, and it didnt seem to do it. When 4x4ing out of my driveway this morning the truck got into a real bad hop and like a car wouldnt stop until i stopped the truck, luckily I could back out and wasnt stuck. I thought maybe if I gave it more gas it would stop and just spin through but it just sped up the hopping action!
I wondered if it was maybe because these fords have factory lift blocks in the back, and my old chevy 4x4 didnt, and maybe thats why it didnt seem to do it. But it was the front end that was hoping around alot more then it was the rear. So I dont think its the blocks. Either way this seemed real hard on the truck. Nothing is broken or anything but just in general it cant be good for the old beast to hop around like that, its no 64 impala or anything! Seems like a good way to loosen everything in the interior and possibly even do other damage??
Does your guys' 4x4s do this too and if so when it does what do you do? Pin it and try to keep going or just keep backing up and going a little further each time? It seemed to do it weather I gave it just a little gas or lots of gas and everywhere inbetween. Wouldnt be my old bias ply tires would it?
Anyways, give your input!
Thanks guys!

I am looking at selling my 1970 Mustang fastback and getting a 1971 Trans Am w/455 H.O. 4 speed 12 bolt posi --- all there, all original numbers match.

whoa laredo... reading your last post is like an eulogy... most 4x4's that i've been in have a shimmy sort of feeling when turning sharp slowly... i heard that it could be the diffy binding (common on the new chebbies) or traction changing. if you're slightly spinning and hooking traction at the same time, it'll feel like wheel hop.

It definatly went through twice or five times what my F250 does, but along with the locker it also had 6" lift and 35" tires. If it would have been a 3/4 or 1 ton i might have kept it, but it was only a 1/2 ton. I have been contemplating getting a locker for this truck, since it doesnt seem to go through much. Or maybe I should get some radials instead of these nobby old bias plys? I just hate to take them off when they have a ton of tread left on them, and very aggresive tread!
My car is a yellow/black 72 Nova, 350 with around 300-325 HP, TH350, 3.23 posi.

Yeah i think that might be it, spinning and hooking traction. With it being a 4spd, I was in 2nd gear and I guess even when I pinned it it wasnt spinning fast enough for it to actually spin without catching some traction. I guess with my old chevy with an auto I could pin it enough to make it spin without catching that traction? even though it went through alot deeper snow?

My 77 f 150 4x4 does the same thing in the snow. I was thinking new shocks might help as well as getting rid of the factory lift blocks. I learned my lesson on holding it to the pin with my 78 super cab 4x4 by breaking my rear springs and grenading my front u-joints in the axle. good thing its just a beater ha ha.
