All very good stuff guys; I need to check the fuses(d'oh) tomorrow, when it quits raining. The AutoZone stories are enlightening,to say the least.

I'm a bit rusty at automotive troubleshooting, used to be a diesel & automotive mechanic(30 years ago), be haven't had much interest in it for quite a while. Looks like I'll have to catch up with the present, as I'm not willing to be at the mercy of someone who is either un-knowing or un-scrupulous.

Just to chime in about pulling a cable with it running.....nasty stuff can happen. Even before the computer age, once when jumping a car for a buddy, the battery cable CAME OFF with the jumper cable. We didn't want to shut it off in -25 temps. (just got it going), so just seperated stuff and hooked it back up. I don't think he 1 light left in that car, fuses blown, it was a mess.

Put in a new alternator from Napa...she's working good now!

I just need to find out how to get the drivers side door switch to quit 'sticking'; have tried the drench with WD-40 trick, with no success. I'm sure there's a relay somewhere connected to it, but my wonderful Haynes manual (naturally) shows everthing but.

The guys at the store were very confused. I ended up replacing both. The problem persisted, I took the alternator back and replaced it again. Still had the problem with engin light coming on and battery would not charge. I had alredy checked all the related fuses but i went back again double check them. this time I pulled each fuse and checked with a multimeter. Ah-HA! the fuse for the alternator field in the power distribution box was BROKEN, not blown but broken. I replaced the fuse and no more prblems. Dam 20 cent fused cost me hours of cussin. The power distribution box is built in sections, the fuse briged over two sections and vibration between the two sections I guess broke the fuse. Making intermittend contact.

It is under the hood on the drivers side, over the front left wheel. the cover is hinged so it can be accessed easily. Refer to your owners manual to find the fuse or relay location in the power distribution box your lookin for.

1999 F150 Bad Alternator?

I'm hoping someone can help me. I have a '99 F150 5.4L. Yesterday the batt light lit up on the dash when I started the truck. It would stay on steady most of the time, and flicker some of the time while driving around town.

However, when my speed reached just over 70 mph on highway, the batt light went off and stayed off until I exited the highway and backed down to lower speeds. Then the batt light lit up again.

Today the batt level indicator on the dash was considerably lower than yesterday when the batt light is on. When the batt light shuts off on the highway, the batt level indicator goes back up.

It has done this two days in a row now. Bad alternator?

Thanks for any help offered.
