First and Foremost, Welcome to FTE:

Made the upgrade on 65 F100 and as you noted it's pretty much a direct swap with 72-79 Ford pickups. Not familiar with the 64 chassis setup, wonder if upgrade on straight axle would be simular to installing p/s in a 4X4. Came across an article ' intigrating power steering for Ford 67-72 4wd', may be worth checking out. The article is in another Ford truck forum and would need to run a search "the 67-72 Ford Pickup Resource" , go to the home page with the list of articles. Certain more experienced member on topic can provide current info, again welcome to FTE!!!

If you get stumped using donor parts, this vendor, www.gearheadsnd.com, has everything you'll need to add PS if you have a Y block in your truck...I'm about to do this with my own '64 and sourced it from them...it's not cheap, though.

I`ve thought about PS for my `62. The boxes on the `65 up trucks do not look like they will swap. Of course anything can be adapted to work, but it may require some major mods.
I`ve been tossing around the idea of using a rack-n-pinion with my straight axle. Just fabricate some mounting brackets onto the axle and use steering u-joints to connect column, mount a ps pump on the engine and voila !
Why wouldn`t this work ?

FYI: No Limit Engineering has something similar to what you're talking about: http://www.nolimit.net/prodinfo.asp?number=PS%2DSA%2D
You may want to also check it out. Runs about $600.

use the twin i beam and use drop spindles to lower it i put a 64 fioo on a 79 frame
and it handles100% better . i am building my second 64 the same way now .witch is really nice if your going with a performace drivetrain not to mention it will ride alot better.

ok i understand but the 72 box will not work on the 64 because the gear box mounts inside the frame and behind the front axle so you will have to find something in the aftermarket but it wont be cheap you can check old threads and classic truck sights
also i still have the complete manual box and column out my 64 if you need any of the pieces let me know

Thanks for the link. Proves that my idea will work. $589 is $594 more than I have in this truck though ....

I am a fabricator. I`ll build my own kit.
