05 Headlight Upgrade for an 01 Excursion

A few questions. I have the header panel coming and the headlights. This goes into an 01 Excursion

1. Other than the headlights harness, there are 2 other bulbs there and they will be fine, right? IOW I just need to unscrew them and transfer to the new headlight and life is good, right?

2. There seems to be some confusion from my searches. I know I either have to hog out the header panel or get the 05 unit, right? So, do I need to change the grille or hog it out or leave it alone?

TIA

I cut the header panel on mine. I would think the grille would still work though.

Has anyone reused the grille WITHOUT doing anything to it and have it look decent? Any pics?

1. The lights you bought came with lamps or not. If the lamps are included and they are similiar to the HD lights I have you will have problems with the front signal going into the plug. Or I should say "I had problems with it". It just needed a little more omph to get it in then the other plug. No big deal really though.

2. I am not sure if the grill would work or not with the 05 and up headlight bucket. I just cut mine and it worked fine. If you change the grill then you will need to cut the bottom of the 05 grill to make it fit. If you cut the bucket then it is just trial and error. Cut and check, cut again see where it hits. Seems easier to do it this way to me but I didnt have a bunch of time on my hands to do it.

Either way good luck and let us know how it comes out.

No. Just the headlight assembly. Not worried about the bulb since I think I am going to switch to bi-xenons in a kit from ebay.

Not cutting the bucket. Just changing the bucket.

I dont think it should have a problem with the grill. Doesnt the 05 and up grill hook just like ours, on top and bottom? If so then the 99-04 grill should work. I would think.

Since the front ends of our trucks are the same- I just cut the header panel out, a nice big square and the headlights fit fine. Got to reuse the stock grille perfectly, and the lights are nice. You'll need the harness to adapt from 9007 to 9008 lights. Stock light housings "should" come with at least head lights. The corner markers and the turn signals will transfer over.

Since I got the header panel I will have to use it. It is on the way and I paid for it already. That is why I wanted to know if it will work with the stock grille.

Maybe, maybe not. I would think that depends on the HID kit I get and how it goes together. If it is just spade connectors, I doubt it makes a difference, does it?

Not if they are take offs they don't

That is good to know. Thanx

Ahh, in that case, the top "should" screw in normal. The bottom you might have to find a way to zip tie the bottom. My reasoning comes from the fact you can use the stock header panel on a 05+ grille, and zip tie the bottom in.. which means it can be done the opposite?

Right, the top holes will match on the 05-07 header panel and the 99-04 grille.

The slots on the bottom for the grille to clip into will be in the wrong position and you will need to zip tie it as metioned.

Reason being...the 05-07 grilles are taller.

Doesn't seem to be that bad then. Doesn't look bad when zip tied, does it? TIA

I'm guessing, no.

I've seen the opposite....a 05-07 grille zip tied to a 99-04 header panel and you couldn't tell.
