Trucks at the dealer and they want to change the fuel pump

I have an Early 99 that is at the dealer (has been since Saturday) for a no start on Friday. They just called and have determined there is no fuel pressure and want to change the fuel pump. Cost is $860. I'm assuming this is the in tank pump and am wondering. Are there any upgrades or things I could have them do while the tank is down? Also, does this sound like a reasonable price? I just called NAPA and they want $390 for the in tank pump (special order). I'll pay the $400 labor since I'm out a vehicle right now. I'm just concerned that it took a full day of troubleshooting to find a faulty fuel pump.
Thanks,
Todd

Should Be Right Under Your Drivers Side Door On The Frame. You Can Get One On Ebay For Around $100 Or $169 At Autozone If You Dont Want To Wait. Its Not In The Tank. And Should Take About 1/2hr To Change Yourself

I think I assumed for $860 it was in the tank. Just talked to another mechanic and he says they are killing me on labor for this job. I'm on hold with the dealer right now. Rediculous.

HEY MAN DONT DO IT, I KNOW IT SUX NOT HAVING YOUR VEHICLE BUT......BRING IT HOME AND DO IT YOURSELF. EVEN TOWING IT BACK AND BUYING A PUMP AND QUICK DISCONNECT TOOL, YOU'LL BE OUT LESS THAN $200. (OR TOW IT TO A FRIENDS HOUSE AND TEL THE WIFE YOU PAID $900 TO HAVE THEM FIX IT ) THEN SPEND SAVINGS ON PERFORMANCE PARTS

if it's the pump, get it out of there and change it yourself. i got a replacement at oh-rye-lees for $100.

did they tell you they are 100% positive? the only reason I replaced mine was because I wasn't getting any fuel/pressure. In the process of changing out the pump and filters, I found out the screen in the tank was plugged. Yep, got some really bad fuel. I blew air through it both way until fuel was coming with good pressure. so I replaced a perfectly good pump and carry the old one as a spare. the next day I ordered the hutch kit from ITP.

just a thought considering the $$$$ you have been quoted.

I'd hold too. No way a pump on the frame should cost that much.

Thanks guys. I'm going to have the truck towed to KCM and have the in tank mods and the pump replaced. I personally don't have the time to do this - but will end up spending ~ the same money and will get all the upgrades out of it. I appreciate the help.

Most of the time the dealer's labor rate is twice as high as a regular shop's rate.

$860.....ouch.

I'm with everyone else, do it yourself. I am by no means no super mechanic but I wouldn't hesiate to change the fuel pump. It's super easy to get to.

A good way to check your pump; open drain valve on fuel bowl and drain fuel, when empty, turn ignition on and see if any fuel is coming out, if it's coming out at a good pace I'd think your pump is good.
