460 Detonation?
I recently swapped in a 460 in my 68 F-100 SWB 2WD. I believe it is 71 model 460 with: 10.5:1 compression, Weiand Stealth intake non-EGR, 4160 Holley, MSD ingnition 6A & Blaster 2 coil. It has a mild RV/towing cam, stock cast iron heads, flowtech headers, 2-1/2" exhaust w/(2) 2-chamber flowmasters.
I finally got all the leaks solved and have been tinkering with the carburetor and timing. Timing is set to 36 degrees total advanced timing. Anything lower than that it backfires through the carb if you try and give it very much gas. At 36 degrees it is what I believe detonating when I give it very much gas, or just before it shifts gears. It does not do it at all in park. Also when in park and you rev it up real quick, it takes it longer to idle back down all the way. For instance, if you rev it up to about 3000 RPM and let off the throttle real fast, it will drop to about 1500 RPM and then a few seconds later it will drop down to idle about 800 RPM.
I am running 93 octane fuel and live at sea level.
Other than that is seems to run pretty good.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what to look for?
Thanks in advance for any help. -68FORD

The distributor is off by ONE Tooth.
Re-adjust it.
