Disconnect the EPC???

Just bought the 95 exploder sport with 4 wheel drive. The guy I got it from put a rebuilt trans in (4r55e) to the tune of $1300 but it still had some gremlins I got it to stop jumping in and out of OD by putting a new speed sensor and gear in but it still shifted really hard. So after researching all the forums and asking around I took it to a reputable trans shop and had the EPC solenoid replaced. It seemed to soften the shifts for about a day buy now back to hard up and down shifts. Now that I got all that out there I heard that should have disconnected the EPC altogether and this would bring the pressures down to where they need to be. Now this doesn't sound right but on the other hand if all it does is diagnose then maybe.......Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you cant disconnect the epc , first the processor would go into failsafe and the transmission control pressure would go to max , really harsh shifts , try disconnecting the battery overnight to erase teh keep alive memory and try it again also whoever rebuilt teh trans might have modified the valve body

Thanks for the reply. I have disconected the batt and reset everything but to avail.. The harsh conditions continue. And the tranny shop said that it was not giving any codes and I just hate to keep throwing money @ this thing and getting no results. I guess I could try to drop the valve body and see if the gasket is broken anywhere or maybe get it rebuilt while it's out. any suggestions?

no codes is not unusual on a harsh shift condition , dropping the valve body is most likely a waste of time a blown gasket would result in slippage or missed shifts , i suspect that whoever rebuilt it installed some kind of shift kit if so your better off buying a used valve body from a transmission parts supplier and have it cleaned checked and installed , are all the shifts harsh or only one or two

The shift from first to second is the problem. It also does it on the down shift,From second to third is fine. Also the problem seems to be intermittent sometimes it will drive perfectly but then again some times it is not only harsh but noisy (clunking). Thanks again for the help with this.

ok , this is a possible problem with the intermediate servo , there are two servos on the right side of the trans the pistons and the springs are different in size if the trans has a soft 3-4 shift they may have switched the servos or the springs you would have to remove the servos to check them it can be done in the vehicle you have to remove the catalytic converter to access them
