Place to buy dropped axle?
#32
because the newly dropped axle will not come with new bushings and kingpins and you'd never want to try to reuse old ones. New bushings will need to be pressed into the axle then reamed to fit the new kingpins. I'm not real familiar with the parts houses thart deal in F1 parts but they are readily available.
I can't seem to recommend strongly enough you REALLY should go the Jag IFS route rather than the dropped axle! It is far superior, cheaper and easier than any other option!

Cody- $370 for a dropped axle is a good deal. You won't find one cheaper. I haven't purchased anything from droppedaxle.com. He's on ebay. The prices I put is what he quoted me on ebay. I think his reserve price is $350? plus the 50 for a core. Unfortuately, every project I've started, always seems to be a bargain, but ends up costing me in the end. Good luck with your decision.
AX always has excellent advise and knows his suspension stuff. I found the best prices at Speedway.com for the kingpin set and the tie rod ends, and it was at my doorstep within 2 days.

The realistic scenario is that next to nothing of the stock parts are going to be useable after 60 years of neglect, and will also need replacing at a higher cost and still will never be as good as the Jag or get him on the road as quick. There is no such thing as a "budget" build in this hobby. He can spend 400.00 for just a dropped axle or < 400.00 for a later model complete front suspension including disk brakes, shocks power steering, sway bar. His stock column can be modified to be used for just a few bucks. A rebuild stock steering box is >300.00 and it's still an "armstrong" manual box of an antique design. There are a whole lot more parts to a front end than just the axle. I have a dropped beam axle with all new parts, PS and disk brakes under Gracie because I bought it that way and am in no hurry to change it, but if a Jag donor came along the front and rear IS would be under her in a heartbeat.

Steering options:
For the Jag: Stock Jag.
For the beam axle: Toyota 4x4 PS box.
The Jag bodies were made of powdered rust, so low milege IFS and/or entire car are relatively available depending on the part of the country where you live. If you can find an entire car I'd grab it, there are a lot of usable or saleable parts on it. The rear suspension is also very usable.

Thanks for the heads up on DroppedAxles.Com I just ordered one for my 51F1 today. I'm getting a 3" dropped unit outright for $350.00 plus $25.00 shipping.
I found this guy in Oklahoma that does a bunch of axles for Ford trucks the other day. His web address is Droppedaxles.com. Peace

There is a fellow in Guthrie Ok that is dropping axles for our trucks. Actually for most trucks and cars. He had some at a local swap meet last weekend and they "look" good. Talked with a friend from Guthrie and he tells me the guy is respected there and he has heard nothing but good about his axles. I did not ask for a price on F100, but did for my 40 sedan and it was $250. Droppedaxles.com I believe is the site. I have his card at home. While searching for the site address I was taken to a stovebolt site where they were discussing how good his products are. Joe

Yea Joe, Sid Droppedaxles.com is the one I purchased my axle from yesterday. He is at the Pate Swapment in Texas this weekend. Thanks for the information on him I looked on the Hamb, and Hotrodders Forum, and couldn't find anything negative about him. Just the usual IFS, Vs Dropped Axle information, while finding it interesting reading it can get a bit confusing on which is the best way to go. When you have saved for a year to make this purchase you always have to wonder if this is the best decision. In my case I still want to run the Flathead and have the ability to drop the pan if necessary without having a crossmember in my way.
