So its actually machined out? I was thinking it had an aftermarket snail shell and wheel. It would be nice if it came with a 4" intake instead of the 3".

How can you tell when the thrust bearings are toast? Does it sound like my endplay and drag while spinning situation?

To the best of my knowledge it is machined and not another housing.
To check thrust bearings remove the intake tubing. with a cold engine (so you don't burn yourself) grap the end of the shaft and push and pull inline with the shaft (actually left to right of the truck, not side to side of the turbo, forward and back on the truck), you should have no movement. the spec is .008 of an inch.

Flea if you have a cali truck you will have a UFO disc on the rear of the fuel pump.

oh ok, so what does the side to side movement mean? (front to back of truck). There is my 1/32-1/16" play

I just checked the thrust bearing and there is no noticeable play.

Tim, are you talking about on the low pressure side, top of pump or below near the high side?
Also are there any codes to tell?
My truck seems to have more power than a friends OBS with the same mods.

side to side play is in the journal bearings. its normal to have some play there since the oil actually takes up that space. Does the wheel scrap the housing?

Stock Power Strokes only run 10 or 12 PSI boost?

No wonder I have so much fun with my 6.9 at 25 PSI.

Some run that low but thats not the norm. 15 is what I consider norm but usually 16-17 also. My 95 ran 20 stock. My 97 in current form sees 33 even after the intercooler install just takes a little longer to get there than before the IC.

No but when the engine is cold I have noticed a boost related scraping sound. I have no idea whan that could be other than the turbo not getting the oil it needs cuz when its warm it fine. I have always babied it when the motor is cold and dont turn up the chip til its warmed up

Scrapping sound? Interesting. Does it do it when your spooling up? Sounds like it could be the impeller wheel hitting the housing.

On my rig you can see where it's hit the housing once or twice but it doesn't make and noises and the fins look fine.

Being pretty new to modding these trucks, I'd be curious to know what I've added at the flywheel and wheels.

I have nothing but seat of the pants to go by.

What would some of you more experienced guys think Im pushing?

95 with 280k on it. So the stock 225 was probably 175...lol

I've added so far
60hp super chip
4" dp
4" straight all the way back
Stage 1 DIY's
The wix air filter swap listed here
A TPS built auto, with a TCi converter

I dont what power it made, but I was pleased that my buddy couldnt pull away on me in his 08 duramax. Mind you, the duramx is stock of course.....lol

Definately feels like I've put 100plus hp to the wheels, but I dont really know.

I have a 99 intercooler to go in, and am looking at a DP tuner chip, and snow performance stage 2 in the new year.

Im shooting for big towable power. I need to haul somewhere in the range of 12-13000lbs on our road trips.

Will the dp, intercooler, and meth make a significant difference over what Im running now? I mean, Im sure it will, but wondering how dramatic it will be.

first off.. at the flywheel stock (with 280k miles) you were probably making 215ish... you're probably at roughly 285-295 at the flywheel or about 225-235 at the wheels... the 08 dmaxs make 350hp at the flywheel stock... or about 275-280hp at the wheels.... the main thing i think you're noticing is the lack of turbo lag now... which makes a GIGANTIC seat of the pants difference...
as for the reason he didn't just plain run from you... maybe he's heavier?? gearing... speed you started out at (gearing is involved in this).... too many variables to list....
the dp will make a HUGE difference... especially in EGT drop... i hope you have gauges, if not that should be the next thing you do, the intercooler won't make too much of a difference if you're not puffing smoke like crazy once the trubo spools.... the meth will lower EGTs but i would look at new turbo like the d66 or h2e instead of a water-meth kid...
just my 2cents
