Ford Aerostar Front CV Bolt Size

Does anyone know the bolt size or where to purchase CV Bolts for a AWD 97 Aerostar 4.0L.

(the bolts that connect the CV joint/axle to the engine area.

I replaced mine a long time ago with Allen head cap screws, and the only thing I remember about them is that their heads were 10mm. According to standard sizing charts, that would be for a 6mm shank. Sorry, I don't have my old bolts to check for sure. Can you remove one of yours to see?

97 AWD 4.0L Ford Aerostar CV Bolt (T45 Head)

If anyone is wondering, it looks like an M8 x 1.25 works best in the Aerostar, despite being told by ford its a 5/16x18

The length is 65mm (just over 2.5in).

I was able to get 4 of 6 bolts into the CV where it joins with the transmission. No issues so far on the highway. I also added a bit of blue loctite to the threads to prevent this from happening again.

Wow, what exactly happened to the bolt? On mine, the CV joints connect to the front axle, not the transmission.

I was driving at about 70-75km/h and accidentally hit Overdrive Off. I guess the sudden shift in gear sheared the last bolts that were still attached. I think the others backed themselves out over time.

However, the passenger side looks fine.

Here's what it looked like:

Well, hopefully, only the bolts were damaged, and the threads in the flange are still intact.

Also, I note that the front axle flanges that connect to the CV shafts on my 1990 model have only 4 bolts, and your 97 model have 6.

Maybe you already know, you should use thread locker on the bolts to prevent this from happening again.

Yours look quite different from my '90 model. That looks like a rubber isolater. Is that on the differential side or the wheel side?

Ok, it’s apparently a grease cap with a spacer. Unfortunately due to age I haven’t really found any so I’m headed to a junkyard that hopefully has one.
